Subject: Press Release re: Emergency Relief Funds for HIV Organizations
Date: Tuesday, September 20, 2005 2:29 PM
"The Above and Beyond Fund" Raises & Distributes $4750
Emergency Relief Fund Established by Under One Roof
San Francisco-Under One Roof, the San Francisco based organization
which generates unrestricted funding on behalf of 35 AIDS service
organizations announced today that it had raised and is distributing
$4750 to three AIDS service organizations in Louisiana and Alabama. The
organizations receiving the funds are the Baton Rouge AIDS Society on
behalf of Brotherhood Inc. ($2000), the Mobile AIDS Support Services
($2000) and Montgomery AIDS Outreach ($750).
"After placing numerous calls to their colleagues in the region, our
expert advisory panel recommended we immediately wire money to these
three organizations on the frontline of this tragedy" said Mike
Marshall, Executive Director of Under One Roof. "We have had difficulty
reaching functioning organizations in New Orleans or southern
Mississippi to support at this time, but we expect that our next
disbursements will go to these devastated communities."
"Its clear from our due diligence that most of these organizations need
funds to help feed, house and provide basic services to their HIV
positive clients" said Mike Smith, Executive Director of the AIDS
Emergency Fund, an Above and Beyond Fund advisory panel member.
Under One Roof established "The Above and Beyond Fund" in order to
raise emergency funds on behalf of AIDS service organizations impacted
by Hurricane Katrina to assist them in providing critical services to
individuals living with HIV/AIDS.
The Above and Beyond fund relies on its advisory panel who are in touch
with AIDS organizations in affected communities. The panel is in weekly
contact with AIDS services organizations in Louisiana, Mississippi,
Alabama and Texas and meets weekly to recommend disbursement of funds
that have been donated the previous week. Advisory panel members include
Perry Lang, Executive Director of the Black Coalition on AIDS, Gloria
Nieto, Executive Director of Lyon-Martin Women's health Services; Kevin
Burns, Executive Director of Shanti and Brett Andrews, Executive
Director of the Positive Resource Center.
100% of donated funds are re-granted to agencies in need. Individuals
and organizations can contribute to the fund online at
www.UnderOneRoof.org or mail a contribution to Under One Roof, 549
Castro Street, San Francisco, CA 94114.

A division of Army Airborne is staying at Holy Cross College in Algiers.
They came by when we were clearing our yard (704 River Oaks Dr. in Algiers)
and offered to help. If you contact them the soldiers are willing to help
with such tasks. You should drive over to their location and ask for help.
Also, my neighbor Don (lives right across the street from my house at 705 or
707 River Oaks) will cut down trees for a fee. He is at home and is looking
for things to do. He has been working for people all over the westbank. But
I don't have a phone number for him. Drop by his house and say that Deany

Hello all, I am now back in New Orleans. I arrived yesterday and stayed the night at my sister's house in Algiers. I did drive down to my house on Algiers Point and everything is exactly as I left it. I have been extremely blessed. As I understand, Nagin is inviting Businesses back to the French Quarter, Algiers, and the CBD over the weekend and residents of Algiers are officially allowed back in on Monday, 70115 on Wed. and 70118 on Fri. If anybody needs anything while I'm here and you are not, please let me know. I am more than happy to do anything I can. Hope to see you all here as soon as possible. I haven't had time to assess things though on the drive in I saw lots of damage. Anyway I'm hoping the ferry will be up or the bridge opened monday so I can check out the quarter. LSU Theatre Announces Additional Performances For Fund Raiser
In response to the anticipated attendance, the LSU Department of Theatre has
added two extra performances to The Boy Who Cried Wolfman adapted by Jamie
Angell. This kinetic production of folk tales from around the world for
children of all ages is dedicated to relief and recovery from Hurricane
Katrina. All of the proceeds raised through ticket sales will be donated
to Habitat for Humanity in support of their rebuilding efforts and the LSU
School of Veterinary Medicine with the Louisiana Veterinary Medical
Association for the care of animals displaced by the hurricane.
Directing a cast of LSU students will be Nick Erickson, LSU Theatre
Assistant Professor of Movement and longtime movement coach for Angell's
Company in Los Angeles.
The four stories in the hour long performance are:
Butterball is a Norwegian story of little Butterball outwitting a family of
evil Trolls.
A Chey's Book of Lies is a Cambodian tale about a clever trickster who wins
a place in the King's heart with his foolery.
The Flying Lion from South Africa is a story about the mythic origin of the majestic lion of the Savanna.
The Boy Who Cried Wolfman merges classic tales of the Wolfman and "The Boy Who Cried Wolf" into a modern folk tale.

Dear Rip,
I had to write to let you know that I got a hate phone call on my cell. At
first I thought it was someone joking with me. They said I hear you fags
didn't get to celebrate Southern Decadence this year. I thought it was a
joke and replied Next year we'll be back the caller replied so will AIDS.
I was wrecked. I can't believe that in a situation such as this where so
many people are displaced that someone would waste their time bashing me and
the gay community. All in the name of a God I am not familiar with. What
happened to love thy neighbor as thyself. I thought the looters on Canal St.
took the human race to a very low spot but for someone to think that the
hurricane happened because of God punishing the people of New Orleans is just sick!
Typical of all hypocrites and radicals their phone call was restricted. I
will make it a point in the future to make sure my cell phone number is not
publishes so assholes like this can't kick me when I'm down.
Southern Decadence and New Orleans will survive and be back bigger and
better.

I don't know why it didn't dawn on me before! I live in Idyllwild, CA.
I have a big 5200 sq ft 3 house complex with four guest rooms at 6,000
feet in the San Jacinto mountains between Hemet on the west side and
Palm Springs on the East side of the mountain. I can take up to 8
coupled spouses (commonly referred to as lovers) or 4 singles. I can
help with transportation and maybe with a fund raiser, I can pay for it
all but March Air Force base is not too far away.
I'm a 58 year old, disabled gai male, twice divorced, once from my wife
and once from my male spouse with two lovable and very friendly dogs.
Idyllwild is a small resort town, former summer and winter playground
for the stars until they got too uppity an rich they could fly to
Europe. We have a fairly sizable and active gay community and many gay
owned businesses.
I would imagine that time is of the essence. Have never been convicted
of a crime other an speeding ticket and that was about 15 or 20 years
ago. However, will submit to any criminal or background investigation.
Gays and Lesbians are the last to get help when they need it. Is there
anyone there who needs a roof, a bed or meals. I am her to help.
Pass the word and advise. Thank you.

To All My French Quarter Friends:
I was born and raised in Metairie. I started going to the Quarter when I was 15 years old. I've seen many changes thru the years, but alas, the changes that took place in city government in the early 70's have lead us ( in my humble opinion) to many of the situations we face today. I watched in disbelief as the news media reported all of the things that happened in our dear city during Katrina. I was embarrased..... ashamed.
I saw a posting on the internet today. I'll share it with you now:
In case you aren't familiar with how our government is SUPPOSED to work:
The chain of responsiblity for the protection of the citizens in New Orleans is:
1. The Mayor
2. The New Orleans director of Homeland Security (a political appointee of the Governor who reports to the Governor)
3. The Governor
4. The Head of Homeland Security
5. The President
What did each do?
1. The mayor, with 5 days advance, waited until 2 days before he announced a mandatory evacuation (at the behest of the President). The he failed to provide transportation for those without transport even though he had hundreds of buses at his disposal.
2. The New Orleans director of Homeland Security failed to have any plan for a contingency that has been talked about for 50 years. Then he blames the Feds for not doing what he should have done. (So much for political appointees)
3. The Governor, despite a declaration of disaster by the President 2 DAYS BEFORE the storm hit, failed to take advantage of the offer of Federal troops and aid. Until 2 DAYS AFTER the storm hit.
4. The Director of Homeland Security positioned assets in the area to be ready when the Governor called for them
5. The President urged a mandatory evacuation, and even declared a disaster State of Emergency, freeing up millions of dollars of federal assistance, should the Governor decide to use it.
Oh and by the way, the levees that broke were the responsibility of the local landowners and the local levee board to maintain, NOT THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT.
The disaster in New Orleans is what you get after decades of corrupt government going all the way back to Huey Long.
Funds for disaster protection and relief have been flowing into this city for decades, and where has it gone, but into the pockets of the politicos and their friends.
Decades of socialist government in New Orleans has sapped all self reliance from the community, and made them dependent upon government for every little thing.
Political correctness and a lack of will to fight crime have created the single most corrupt police force in the country, and has permitted gang violence to flourish.
The sad thing is that there are many poor folks who have suffered and died needlessly because those that they voted into office failed them.
For those who missed item 5 (where the President s level of accountability is discussed), it is made more clear in a New Orleans Times-Picayune article dated August 28:
NEW ORLEANS (AP) In the face of a catastrophic Hurricane Katrina, a mandatory evacuation was ordered Sunday for New Orleans by Mayor Ray Nagin.
Acknowledging that large numbers of people, many of them stranded tourists, would be unable to leave, the city set up 10 places of last resort for people to go, including the Superdome.
The mayor called the order unprecedented and said anyone who could leave the city should. He exempted hotels from the evacuation order because airlines had already cancelled all flights.
Gov. Kathleen Blanco, standing beside the mayor at a news conference, said President Bush called and personally appealed for a mandatory evacuation for the low-lying city, which is prone to flooding. (emphasis mine)
The ball was placed in Mayor Nagin s court to carry out the evacuation order. With a 5-day heads-up, he had the authority to use any and all services to evacuate all residents from the city, as documented in a city emergency preparedness plan. By waiting until the last minute, and failing to make full use of resources available within city limits, Nagin and his administration goofed.
Mayor Nagin and his emergency sidekick Terry Ebbert have displayed lethal, mind boggling incompetence before, during and after Katrina.
[&]
As for Mayor Nagin, he and his profile in pathetic leadership police chief should resign as well. That city s government is incompetent from one end to the other. The people of New Orleans deserve better than this crowd of clowns is capable of giving them.
If you re keeping track, these boobs let 569 buses that could have carried 33,350 people out of New Orleans in one trip get ruined in the floods. Whatever plan these guys had, it was a dud. Or it probably would have been if they d bothered to follow it.
As for all the race-baiting rhetoric and Bush-bashing coming from prominent blacks on the left, don't expect Ray Nagin to be called out on the carpet for falling short. You want to know why? Here s why:
It's more convenient to blame a white president for what went wrong than to hold a black mayor and his administration accountable for gross negligence and failing to fully carry out an established emergency preparedness plan.
To hold Nagin and his administration accountable for dropping the ball amounts to letting loose the shouts and cries of Racism! . It s sad, it's wrong, but it s standard operating procedure for the media and left-wing black leadership.
Mark my words: you will not hear a word of criticism from Jesse Jackson Sr., Randall Robinson, the Congressional Black Caucus, the NAACP, or Kanye West being directed toward Clarence Ray Nagin Jr. Why? Because he is just another black politician instead of a responsible elected official who happens to be black. In the mindset of more-blacker-than-thou blacks, black politicians who are on their side can do no wrong.

MAsT Members and Ambush Mag Columnist Located
(September 6, 10 p.m. EDT)
Two more MAsT New Orleans members have been located, the head of
organization, Master Lanie, announced on Tuesday. As a result, all members of the
pansexual M/s group are now accounted for.
Meanwhile, a post on the e-mail list of the New Orleans Bears and Bear
Trappers Social Club by a non-member revealed that Wally Sherwood, who had been
declared missing by several New Orleans groups, is safe in Waco, Texas.
Wally Sherwood was the Man of the Year in this year's Pantheon of Leather,
sponsored by The Leather Journal. Two New Orleans clubs, the Lords of Leather
and the New Orleans Bears and Bear Trappers Social Club, had Mr. Sherwood
listed as missing. He was also declared missing by Ambush Mag, the New Orleans
GLBT magazine that he works for.
Mr. Sherwood sent a brief message to friends that began, "Wally is alive and
well deep in the heart of Texas."
In the meantime, affected leather, BDSM, and related groups are continuing
to track their members.
The New Orleans Bears have announced that they have located five more
members: Gary C., Gary L., James Van D., John L., and Tim H. Thirteen members
remain unaccounted for.
NOBLE (New Orleans Bondage and Leather Enthusiasts) is attempting to figure
out which members are safe. A member of the pansexual group's e-mail list has
started a database of survivors through the Yahoo Groups Website for the
list.
A representative of SMART (Southern Mississippi Associates in Roses and
Thorns) in Moss Point says that the pansexual group now has three members who
"have lost everything and are homeless."

Most MAsT New Orleans Members are Safe
Three Ambush Mag Staff Members are Missing
(September 6, 4 p.m. EDT)
MAsT New Orleans has located all but two of its m
embers, a member of MAsT Houston announced on Tuesday. Meanwhile, a New
Orleans leather-friendly GLBT magazine announced that three of its staff members
are missing, including two leatherfolk.
MAsT NEW ORLEANS
According to Master Ces, a member of MAsT Houston and founder of the D/s
discussion group The Open Door–Houston, nearly all of the members of MAsT New
Orleans have checked in. Two members who do not live in New Orleans are still
unaccounted for.
Master Ces received her information from Master Lanie, head of MAsT New
Orleans.
MAsT New Orleans is a pansexual chapter of Masters And slaves Together, a
national network of organizations for "adults who live the Dominant/submissive
lifestyle."
AMBUSH MAG
The New Orleans magazine Ambush Mag, noteworthy for its heavy coverage of
leather news, has updated its Website with information provided by its
publishers, Rip and Marsha Naquin-Delain.
Rip Naquin-Delain posted a vivid description of what it was like to be in
New Orleans during the crisis:
"We all heard a crash down the street and saw that a police cruiser had
pulled up to Mary's and was breaking down the door. Apparently, we thought, they
were getting supplies they needed to insure the Quarter's safety. Another car
drove up and a police officer, with what looked like a machine gun, got out
and stood guard while both cars were loaded from Mary's. That was certainly
scary. Little did we know that that would be the last time we'd see police
officers through the night and the next morning, Wednesday.
"As the city became pitch black with nightfall, the noise began. . . ."
Mr. Naquin-Delain said that three of their New Orleans staff members have
not yet contacted the magazine: Toni Pizanie, Wally Sherwood, and Kevin M.
Butler.
Toni Pizanie was the first runner-up in the Miss Louisiana Leatherette
contest in 2004, which was sponsored by the Lords of Leather Mardi Gras Krewe.
Wally Sherwood was the Man of the Year in this year's Pantheon of Leather,
sponsored by The Leather Journal. Two New Orleans clubs, the Lords of Leather
Mardi Gras Krewe and the New Orleans Bears and Bear Trappers Social Club,
have Mr. Sherwood listed as missing.
Ambush Mag has published a number of e-mails it has received which offer h
elp and tell who has survived from New Orleans.
The magazine is one of the sponsors of the Southern Decadence gay festival,
which attracts many leatherfolk. The magazine earlier announced that an
Unofficial Southern Decadence in Exile will take place on Wednesday, September 7,
at 5 p.m. in Lafayette, Louisiana.
GLBT and mainstream news sites around the nation have been providing
information on a small, impromptu Southern Decadence celebration that took place in
New Orleans on Sunday.
Meanwhile, the news site Gay365.com quoted Dan Craig, FEMA's director of
recovery, as saying that it could take up to two years of repairs before New
Orleans residents were permitted to return to their city.

IML 2005 Urges Leatherfolk to Respond Quickly to Hurricane Victims
Texas Leatherfolk Offer Housing
(September 6, 1 a.m. EDT)
In a post to the Leather Titleholders e-mail list on September 3, this
year's International Mr. Leather, Michael Egdes, urged leatherfolk to set aside
debates over which charity to donate to, and simply respond quickly to the
emergency situation faced by hurricane victims.
"Those who are trapped, starving, sick and homeless cannot afford the luxury
of time," he said. "Gay or straight, young or old, black or white, they need
help now. The gay community has, from all reports, vacated, and it will be
some time before they can inform us of their needs. We should do whatever we
can to help all those who need our help."
Mr. Egdes is coordinating a national relief effort for the leather community
that is aimed at assisting all hurricane victims. A second national relief
effort, sponsored by International LeatherSIR and Leatherboy, is specifically
aimed to assist leatherfolk who have been harmed by the hurricane.
"It is heartwarming to witness the overwhelming response and compassion
demonstrated by our community in this time of need," Mr. Egdes said. "It makes me
so proud to be gay."
Mr. Egdes suggested that the donations should not be turned into a "public
relations opportunity. We should help because, at this time of suffering and
need, it is the right thing to do."
He added, "At the same time, there is no harm in our community taking credit
for doing something that is beneficial to the greater population. I suggest,
therefore, that when donations are made to an organization outside of the
gay community, they are made through an organization that can pass along the
donations in large sums to the respective relief organizations in the name of
the gay community."
MISSING LEATHERFOLK
Leather clubs and related groups continue to issue news on missing members.
As of late September 5, the Cavaliers Motorcycle Club had not yet heard from
four members, the Lords of Leather Mardi Gras Krewe were seeking twelve
members, and the New Orleans Bears and Bear Trappers Social Club says that it has
eighteen missing members. All members of the Crescent City Outlaws are safe.
The Knights d'Orleans and MAsT New Orleans have not yet issued official
reports.
A number of leatherfolk who were previously unaccounted for have made
contact with the clubs, including Mr. Louisiana Leather 1997, Melvin Knight.
Several gay, pansexual, and heterosexual groups in Mississippi and Alabama
have reported that their members are safe, though some members sustained
property damage.
Alabama groups reporting their status to True Tales were CAPE (Central
Alabama Power Exchange) in Montgomery, DARE in Sylacauga, FDMS, SAFE (Southeast
Alabama Fetish Enthusiasts) in Dothan, and the Steel City Centurions in
Birmingham.
Mississippi groups were Jackson Munch in Jackson and SMART (Southern
Mississippi Associates in Roses and Thorns) in Moss Point.
TEXAS LEATHERFOLK HELP OUT
In the meantime, offers of assistance to the hurricane victims continued to
pour in from the leather and BDSM communities.
Travis Wilson, former chairman of the pansexual group Houston People
Exchanging Power, has paired up with Leo il Maestro, president of the Austin
pansexual group GWNN (Group With No Name), to run a project providing housing for
leatherfolk refugees in Texas.
Mr. Wilson was the keynote speaker at the 2004 Leather Leadership
Conference, which was held in New Orleans. He says that his own part of the project now
has "over forty families ready to offer homes, etc., for temporary help to
these leather people in need."
Leo il Maestro wrote to various e-mail lists, "As your friends, family,
slaves, Masters, etc., contact you, please let them know that we now have a huge
number of folks from GWNN in Austin, as well as dozens in Houston and San
Antonio, who have offered us their homes, apartments, empty dungeons for those
needing shelter. We have volunteers who can get to the shelters in Houston,
Dallas, and San Antonio and retrieve folks."

I have a small two bedroom apartment on the west side of Cleveland. It is near the bus and train stations, and I would be able to provide the bare necessities for one person. When I lived in NOLA 20 years ago everyone was so nice to me and I would like to repay that kindness in any way I can.
The job market is not the best here but there are jobs to be found.

Dear Ambush,
I live in Baton Rouge and many of the pets and animals left stranded in New Orleans after the evacuation are now being rescued and taken to the Lamar Dixon Expo Center in Gonzales. My partner of 16 years went to volunteer there today and came back home with many stories to tell. First of all there are literally hundreds of dogs being brought in on a daily basis. Just today they brought in over 400 alone. Many are weak and malnourished and many are coverd with oil from the contaminated water. Some did not make the trip in the horse trailer they were being transported in and died on the way.
The volunteers are doing everything they can do but the biggest problem is that there are not enough volunteers. They need more help desperately.
Could you please post this so that other people may read it and let them know that pets are being saved out of New Orleans. Also that any abody that may have time to donate to please go volunteer and help.
Thank you,

My partner and I own the production company that puts on the Louisiana Reptile & Exotic Animal Show. In the past, it has been in Mandeville. We are moving to Westwego, supposedly in December, but may have to reconsider. So, our hearts are in New Orleans at least twice a year.
We live in Ocean, NC (across Bogue Sound from Emerald Isle). We don't have a lot of space or much to offer. But, if a gay male couple or single gay male needs temporary housing during rebuild or even to relocate, we have room. Must be an animal lover as we have dogs and a cat. A reptile or exotic animal enthusiast with animals would definitely find comfort here. We are in our late 30's/early 40's and monogamous. Just want to help someone REALLY in need. Please write directly to us at themermaidhouse@yahoo.com

If you think this may be of relevance, please pass it on. I work in the multifamily housing business (apartments) and have just heard that the IRS has changed the rules for the tax credit housing program (a major source of assisted housing - not to be confused with city housing authority programs). There is some information on my home state of North Carolina's website about the changes: in a nutshell, people can now rent subsidized tax credit housing regardless of what their income is, and for a lease of less than a year. They only need prove they are "displaced". What this means is that at one of these properties folks can rent for lower than market rents (the program has rent caps). The North Carolina info is at
http://www.nchfa.com/About/hurricanek.aspx
or go to www.nchfa.com and click on the hurricane link. These rules would apply in ANY state - although I am not familiar with locations of apartment complexes in other states.

To my GLBT brother and sisters in New Orleans,
Here I am sitting in my home in the Pacific Northwest, Washington State,
sick as a dog with a really bad cold.
I really don't understand hurricanes and have no experience of what they can
do other than what I read or see in the news. Reading and seeing how bad it
really is in New Orleans is very disheartening. The devastation I see is
beyond description!
I went surfing the web when I happened upon a site that I love (Chris Geary)
who always has lovely photos of gay events around the world.
As I went through the photos of Southern Decadence 2005 it smacked me in the
face that Labor Day Weekend is Southern Decadence and that many of my online
friends attend it.
I became worried that these friends may have been caught in this
horrific-Katrina-event!
I am so glad I found this web site. It seems that many got out even after
Katrina hit. I see that our community is trying to get in contact with family
who may still be in New Orleans.
I see that our community is already responding by scheduling benefits for
victim relief. Thank God for Drag Kings & Queens and Leather-people! They are
the frontrunners for our community. Their visibility will allow all of us to
become aware of the needs that New Orleans will be having over the next bunch
of months. Of course, I must also thank their wig/makeup crew, the host, the
DJs, the barhelp and the many patrons who willing give money to help dry up
the flood in New Orleans with a flood of cash.
My prayers are with you, know this God/Goddess Loves all of us the same!
Just because some of us are GLBT does not mean that She/He targeted our
community with Katrina!
If anything it was a test of our National Defense and its ability to
galvanize troops and help in the face of a natural disaster on our own shores!
As for those who cast stones... instead of giving a helping hand and food or

Dear Friends:
There are no words that can express how much hurt my soul has felt during the past week with Katrina. Thankfully at this time most my friends and family are safe.
With all of my focus going toward my friends and family in New Orleans and making sure Ambush Magazine is up and running as fast as humanly possible, I have decided to give up my job as Boy in the City with Red Magazine. I don't plan to be in Houston enough to write about what is actually going on here. Nor do I feel the need to write about Advertiser driven Fluff during this very serious time in our lives.
New Orleans has been my home for so many years, even after moving here to Houston, that I just feel like my words as well as my actions can be better served doing things to help my community rebuild.
Thank you all for your help during the past week, please know that New Orleans and others effective by this storm greatly love you for all you are doing and continue to do.
Ambush will be in print before you know it.

Hello,We are contacting you from the San Juan Islands north of Seattle Washington. We live here now but are actually from Texas. We own a cabin just outside Huntsville Texas and are offering it as a home for a displaced family or person/s to regroup. It's nothing fancy, but, it is private and has a place for pets. As lesbians, we believe in taking care of our own. If there is a gay or lesbian family, couple or person that needs a small private cabin on a creek just north of Houston in Huntsville, give us a call. Cheryl 360-770-4142. It would be a place to regroup. It is pretty easy to get a job as a prison guard in Huntsville so employment could be fast. Best of luck from us.

Dear Friends,
Under One Roof announced today the formation of "The Above and Beyond Fund," a special fund to assist HIV/AIDS service organizations in Louisiana and Mississippi.
The goal in establishing the fund is to assist AIDS service organizations devastated by Hurricane Katrina in reopening their doors as soon as possible so that they may continue to provide critical services to individuals living with HIV/AIDS. If you would like to know more about the fund or interview me, Mike Marshall, the executive director of Under One Roof, please contact me at the number below.
In addition to the development of the fund, Under One Roof has recruited a diverse advisory panel of local HIV/AIDS service providers who will advise the Board of Directors of Under One Roof on how the funds raised should be distributed. The panel consists of the following individuals:
1) Kevin Burns, Executive Director, Shanti
2) Brett Andrews, Executive Director, The Positive Resource Center
3) Gloria Nieto, Executive Director, Lyon Martin Women's Health Services
4) Mike Smith, Executive Director, San Francisco AIDS Emergency Fund

My thoughts and prayers go out to all of my brothers and sisters in my home city of New Orleans.
I have just moved to Columbus, OH and would like to offer housing if any of my New Orleans family is in need. I know it's far from home, but I can take in 2 people including their "babies" (pets). As a former resident of the Quarter, I know how long it can take for the gov't to get things like safe water and power etc... back to normal - my home is open for as long as it takes.
Please email me if interested: columbusjames1@hotmail.com

To the Ambush Magazine,
This is to let you know that there is a group of quality men who have banded together to provide assistance to those gay men who are dislocated because of the devastation of hurricane Katrina in Atlanta. This offer of assistance is designed for those in the gay community who are most in need of housing, clothes and general assistance. We have business owners who have offered housing, clothes, haircuts, and jobs.
If any of your employees need assistance, please contact Santa Tim @ 404-246-0184, or email santatim@hotmail.com .
If any of your employees are currently in another city and don't want to relocate to Atlanta, email Santa Tim at santatim@hotmail.com and let us know what city you are in, and we will see if we can get you some assistance. We are attempting to set up a nationwide database/website to assist in connecting those in the gay community who need assistance with those who want to help.
>From the response in Atlanta, there are plenty of upstanding men who wish to help those who have been devastated by this disaster (there are also some not so upstanding men, and we are attempting to weed them out).
This is a grass roots effort by the gay community to help those in our community.

Dear Friends,
Last mass email, I promise, but I think this is a possible form of
action to take that might actually be heard now by our congress, it
would save them money too, which seems to be their highest priority.
I sent these to my senators and rep. Please email yours now if you
can (not just Louisiana!). Or call me a fanatical storm victim if
you must!
love you all.
Dear people who have political decision making power
I am a theatre artist born, raised and currently living in New
Orleans. My company, ArtSpot Productions has travelled around the
world representing the best of Louisiana's experimental theatre. We
have been greatly funded by the Louisiana Division of the Arts and
the Arts Council of New Orleans over our 10 year history.
I am writing today from a safe place in the mountains of Colorado, my
family's summer home. My parents and my sister, her husband and twin
boys (adopted from St. Elizabeth Foundation) are all New Orleans
residents, and we are all safe here.
I want to take this opportunity to ask you and all of the congresss
to bring the troops home. I am a spiritual person like most New
Orleanians and I believe in listening to messages the earth sends
us. The earth is speaking in a major way right now. The water
represents the divine femine in African, Native American and European
cultures. She is obviously speaking to us now. Please, take the
troops out of the Iraqi Gulf and bring them here to our Gulf, where
they are truly needed. It is time for the people of this great land
to send our money, resources, energy and love to acts of creation
rather than acts of destruction. I know you have been fighting for
our wetlands for years now. Perhaps the congress will finally listen
now. Now we will need much more than $14 billion. This is an
opportunity for Mr. Bush to turn the disaster of the war into a
massive humanitarian effort for our country.
I urge you to do all you can to bring the troops home and start
spending federal dollars on our country, our land. Creation, not
destruction, the time is now!

Pride Houston
Hurricane Relief FundAmong the many lives devastated by Hurricane Katrina and its aftermath are thousands of gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender individuals and families. GLBT victims of natural disasters often need special services that are affirming of our sexual orientations and gender identities. Using community resources, we can help ensure that our GLBT sisters and brothers from New Orleans and surrounding areas are not doubly victimized—first by the storm and then by a health care system not attuned to their needs. Pride Houston is partnering with the Montrose Counseling Center and Larry Bagneris, one of the founders of the Houston Pride Parade and Executive Director of the City of New Orleans Human Relations Commission, to provide a conduit for our community to take care of our own.
Your contribution today will be used by the Montrose Counseling Center to provide direct services to GLBT evacuees in the greater Houston area, including counseling, finding housing and navigating through the health care system. The Montrose Counseling Center, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, is one of our community's most respected institutions. Since 1978, it has been providing culturally affirming, quality and affordable outpatient mental health, chemical dependency and case management services, education and research primarily for and about gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender people, people living with HIV disease, and their significant others.
Assistance is needed immediately, so please donate today. Contribute online or download a donation form to mail a check. Pride Houston is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. We also invite you to read a personal letter from Larry Bagneris and to visit the Montrose Counseling Center website.

Hi, My name is Michael....I have been watching the news here in Chicago of

but why not try to get all of those in the GLBT Community that were going to
come to Decadence to take the money that they WOULD have spent over the
weekend and make a donation to someone in need in New Orleans? The Lazarus
Project, etc.
I'm sure that you would be able to come up with quite a hefty sum, since it
is always figured that this weekend alone brings in millions of dollars to
the local economy.
Why not truly give BACK to a community that has made so many sacrifices in
the past, and will continue to make even bigger sacrifices as the horror of
this tragedy comes to light.
Please send this letter on to all in the SD database and see what sort of
response that you get. I'm sure it will help out.

Rich's is willing to donate the space to hold a benefit party for our community of Nola. Any help that I could get to start the ball rolling on this would be great. Performers, dancers, people to work party, sponsers, what-ever , who -ever we can think of to get this started would be great. I'm in Austin all week after today and will work with Marcy to get all her great ideas. A huge part of our gay community in New Orleans is without any type of insurance and with our great american laws, many gay families may not qualify as much as a NORM ( what ever that is ) family would for help. Josh's grandmother has lost her house, luckily she is alright.
If you can't afford monies, can you afford time?
In the mean time, I'm working to locate all my friends and family and do what I can to help them just get the word out to each other that they are alright.
Please help me with ideas. This is a desperate time for so many that if we do not do something to help these people, frankly I could not live with my self. Please pass this to anyone you think would be willing to donate to helping us get the ball rolling on this event. Thank you all.

Don't know if any of you are on line. Just hoping we can connect somehow.
What assistance would help the gay community of NOLA get on their feet after the storm. Don't even know what we can do but are willing to try. Is a gay agency in NOLA helping? Is someone here in Houston already working on this?
Note that we prefer to work in the gay community believing that we should always take care of ourselves first.

Hey just a thought but I thought maybe you could post a message on your website when you are able to update it that the people who were attending decadence should donate at least a portion of what they would have spent to some kind of disaster relief. Just a thought, if enough people did that it would be a huge amount of money.
