25th Anniversary Commemoration
Of The Upstairs FireOn a Gay Pride Sun. afternoon on June 24, 1973, the UpStairs Bar burned down with dozens of people inside. The event, which claimed 32 lives, was a tragedy which much of the public tried to ignore because of its connection to the Gay and Lesbian community. Many of the victims, including the pastor and associate pastor, were members of the local MCC congregation. At that time the Fellowship, to which the church belonged, was only five years old. Its founder, Rev. Troy Perry, rushed to the scene from Los Angeles to serve in the role as spokesperson to the media.
At 7:30pm on June 24, Vieux Carre' MCC, along with the Bienville Foundation, will co-sponsor a memorial service commemorating that tragic event. The community-wide observance will be a time of remembering those who perished in the fire which inspired the creation of the Gay and Lesbian movement within New Orleans. Rev. Troy Perry will return to speak at the memorial scheduled to take place at the Royal Sonesta located at 300 Bourbon St. Rev. Perry will also be available the following evening from 6-8pm to speak at a book-signing to take place at Faubourg Marigny Bookstore located at 600 Frenchmen St.
Dana International
At Opening Ceremonies
of Gay Games Amsterdam 1998
By Nellie Voss & Paul van YperenEurovision song contest winner Dana International of Israel will sing at the Opening Ceremonies of Gay Games Amsterdam 1998 on 1 Aug. in the AmsterDam Arena. The transsexual singer will perform her winning song "Diva" and also her hit "Power". At a press conference in Jerusalem she told the international press that she said "yes" to the invitation, because she feels the Gay and Lesbian community is her family.
European newspapers were jam-packed recently with details of Dana's life history, including the sex-change operation, the controversy she arouses in Israeli society, even the story of the court injunction that almost prevented her from participating in the contest.
The Opening Ceremonies will furthermore feature Cheer San Francisco, the group of high-energy performers whose routine draws on popular dance culture and acrobatics, and Dutch Musical star Mathilde Santing, who will also take part in the swimming competition during Gay Games. During the next weeks more surprising international stars will be anounced for the event.
The highlight of the Opening Ceremony will be the traditional entrance of the participants. Athletes and artists from 62 countries will march in alphabetical order per country into the Amsterdam ArenA. Team New York, host of Gay Games IV, is invited to hand over the flag to Team Amsterdam on the central stage. Jan-Eric Hulsman is the young and talented director, and the award winning production company IDTV is the producer of the Opening and Closing Ceremonies. Both ceremonies will attract an expected 50,000 visitors. Tickets for the events are still available through the Gay Games Ticket Center, +31 20 4200200.
