Ambush Staffer Sherwood
Heads New Anti-Crime GroupA meeting of concerned citizens over the sudden surge of muggings and thefts over the past several weeks in the Faubourg Marigny neighborhood has resulted in the organization of a new anti-crime group named the Marigny Against Violence and Vandalism.
Just hours before the MAVV meeting, two more crimes in broad daylight were reported in the Marigny: a wholesale theft of household furniture on St. Roch St. and still another example of ongoing street violence on Rue Burgundy.
The Faubourg Marigny neighborhood lies between the river and St. Claude Ave. and Esplanade Ave. and the railroad tracks.
Spearheading the formation of the MAVV was Wally Sherwood, who has returned to New Orleans following his retirement as Press Officer for the City and County of San Francisco. A former advisor to the Human Rights Commission in that city for eight years dealing with discrimination and hate-crime issues, he has now rejoined the staff of Ambush magazine.
Chosen to serve with chairman Sherwood on the steering committee are five citizens who live or own businesses in the Marigny: Jerce Albert, Jack Carrel, Jimmy Mabile, Shelton Pollet and Dr. Richard Reinhardt.
After the successful organization meeting, the new Marigny Against Violence and Vandalism will be holding a town-hall meeting to more formally address the concerns about personal safety and property. A wide range of responsible officials from all levels of government will be invited to answer questions.
For more information, contact Wally Sherwood, Chairman, Marigny Against Violence & Vandalism, 2525 Rue Chartres St., N.O., LA 70117-8608; phone/fax: 504.949.0882; or e-mail: wsherwoodforest.msn.com.
Senator Irons Urges Young Women
to Enter $3,000 Scholarship Essay ContestState Senator Paulette Irons is urging college-bound high school junior and senior girls to enter the National Foundation for Women Legislators (NFWL) academic scholarship essay contest and perhaps win $3,000 to apply towards a college education.
The essay contest topic is "Freedom and Security in a Decade of Danger," and contestants must relate constitutional protections, like the Bill of Rights, to security and individual freedom during the War on Terrorism. Essays must be submitted by Sept. 30.
Seven winners will be chosen by NFWL, and in addition to the scholarship, will receive an all-expense paid trip to the NFWL Annual Conference in Nov., where they will meet women legislators who will be assigned to the winner as mentors.
"This is an excellent opportunity for young women to find their passion for public leadership. I encourage all junior and senior high school girls who are interested in a college education to apply," said Senator Irons.
The Senator said there has been an increased interest in public service by young people since the Sept. 11th terrorist incident, and the essay contest gives applicants an ability to demonstrate their understanding of current events in relationship to the American Constitution.
Essays should be between 300 and 700 words, and winners will be notified by Oct. 25, 2002. The scholarship can be applied to any freshman tuition at any U.S. college or university. To learn more about other requirements and to receive an application, contact Senator Irons' office at 504.568.6800, or call Julie Swaney, NFWL 202.337.3565 x 1010; e-mail nfwl@erols.com.
