Gay Non-Fiction - A Roundup
by Brad Benedict

One of the best non-fiction books on the market now is The Gay Men's Wellness Guide. This is the National Lesbian and Gay Health Association's complete book of physical, emotional, and mental health and well-being guide for every Gay male.

Millions of Gay men in this country are disproportionately affected by certain ailments; and, in addition, diseases often take on different manifestations in Gay men than in straight men. In some urban Gay communities, hepatitis B is in epidemic proportions. One in two men are HIV-positive. Fifty-four percent are taking care of a seriously ill friend, and a third of Gay men have sought the advice of a therapist.

To my knowledge, this is the first comprehensive resource available to give Gay men in this country the general information tailored specifically to their physical, mental, emotional, spiritual, social and sexual well-being.

Priced at $19.95, this one is an Owl Books Original Paperback/Henry Holt and Co. publication. It was written by Robert E. Penn, formerly an assistant director of the Gay Men's Health Crisis, in consultation with twenty-four leading health-care providers who specialize in Gay health concerns.

One of the most interesting of the new non-fiction books is called Twenty Million New Customers! It's all about understanding Gay men's consumer behavior. Most of the world's population is in the dark when it comes to this pattern of behavior.

In very colorful and informative chapters, the reader can come to understand why Gay men are a vital consumer lifeline in today's clothing industries as you tap into revealing psychological characteristics that will benefit any business manager. This is a scholarly study, but it remains very personal and poignant.

This book carries you into a day in the life of 44 Gay men and their buying patterns. Some readers may even consider some of these patterns deviant, but every pattern described is always interesting.

The hardcover edition of this book from The Harrington Park Press of Binghamton, New York is $39.95. The softcover edition is only $19.95. Both are well worth the price.

Also from The Harrington Park Press is another very good book. Gay and Lesbian Literature Since World War II chronicles the multifaceted explosion of Gay and Lesbian writing that has taken place in the second half of the twentieth century. Encompassing a wide range of subject matter and a balance of Gay and Lesbian concerns, it includes work by established scholars as well as young theoreticians and archivists who have initiated new areas of investigation.

The hardcover edition is $49.95, and the softcover version is $19.95.

Another book from this publisher is also excellent in all respects. HIV and Social Work, A Practitioner's Guide is the result of work by experienced social workers who share their wisdom, knowledge and skills on a broad range of issues. It's a practical, user-friendly resource for social workers who practice in a variety of settings and fields.

This one in hard cover is $69.95 or $24.95 in the softcover edition.
