A FUNNY THING HAPPENED ON THE WAY TO THE FORUM

Le Petit's Sonny Borey directs this popular musical spoof of Roman comedy which boasts a book by Larry Gelbart with music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim. Karen Hebert is the choreography; Derek Franklin, music and vocal director; Debbie Simeon, costume designer; G. Allen Rusnak, set designer; and, Daniel Zimmer, lighting designer. AT THE CLUB TOO SWEET ON BOURBON STREET

The terrific trio that gave us Daryl's Perils has struck again. With book and lyrics by Ricky Graham and David Cuthbert and music by Harry Mayronne, Jr., and direction by Ricky Graham, a brand-new musical comedy about Bourbon Street entertainers, circa 1958, hits the boards. Starring Becky Allen as Busty Rusty Russell, the Saucy Sophisticate of Song who has organized a Bail Bond Benefit for her SOS fund (Save Our Strippers), and Michael Bennett as Buddy Ray, the erascible emcee of this vaudeville turn, the show features Renee Maxwell as Dixie Lee Barrymore, the Bernhardt of Burlesque, Sean Patterson as My-O-My star Dani Delmar, the dance team of Lothar and Lupe (Roy Haylock, who also doubles as costume designer, and Mandy Zirkenbach), with Chris Wecklein, Veronica Giacano, Lara Nelms, Troi Bechet, Amanda Hebert and Phil Blunt as a heckler. Chris Jones does the scenery and lighting. Fri., 8pm; Sat., 6:30pm & 9pm; special Sun. matinee, July 26, 3pm thru July 26.

CLASS OF '70SOMETHING

Carl Walker reprises his hit musical revue of songs from the 70s that played this venue two years ago. With musical direction by Jack Fowler, costumes by Roy Haylock and Charlotte Lang and promising a more elaborate set than the original by designer Ron Williams, this edition boasts the return of Wess Hughes, Charlotte Lang and Danon Smith from the original production. The newbies are: Anthony Bailey, Eddie Collins, Randy Juneau, Daniel Morgan, Cynthia Owen (returning to New Orleans) & Dorian Rush. Thurs. & Fri., 8pm; Sat., 6pm & 9pm; Sun., 3pm.

THE GAME SHOW

Written and directed by Rene J. F. Piazza, this satire on TV game shows is described as a night of pure entertainment for the whole family...filled with zany contestants, bizarre questions, and enough audience involvement to make anyone want to play the games right along with the actors. The cast includes Daryl Cade, Gene Desrochers, Mario Taormina, Stacy Taliancich, Vic Palazzo, Gwen Chevalier, Michael Sullivan, Farrah Layne Wright & Rene J. F. Piazza. The Shakespeare Festival at Tulane presents the Bard of Avon's political drama about an ambitious leader's rise to power and tragic downfall in ancient Rome. Buzz Podewell directs a cast that includes Gavin Mahlie, Mark McLaughlin, George Sanchez & Adriana Bate Thurs -Sun., 7:30pm, Sun., 2pm, thru June 28.

NOT ABOUT NIGHTINGALES

This highly praised London premiere production of an early Tennessee Williams play about prison corruption comes to America intact, with direction by Trevor Nunn and starring the original London cast which includes Colin Redgrave, whose sister, Vanessa, was responsible for unearthing this rare gem and instigating this rare reciprocal production. Thru July 3.

Dog & Pony Theatre Co. presents its annual Shakespeare in the Park production this year with the Bard's powerful drama of jealousy and deceit. PRIVATE EYES

Producers Trish Denmark and Fred Nuccio present the New Orleans premiere of this comedy of suspicion in which nothing is ever quite what it seems by Steven Dietz which was presented at the 1997 Humana Festival at the Actor's Theatre of Louisville. Directed by Shelley Poncy, it features her husband, Russell Hodgkinson, Bob Pavlovich, Gemma Denmark, Jan Chamberlain & Mary lee Gibbons. Thurs. - Sat., 8pm, thru July 11.

Julie Condy's Summer Stages kicks off its season of two shows for young people with this musical comedy with book by Philip Freedman & music and lyrics by James Beloff. Find out what happens when a girls-only slumber party is crashed by a group of boys in this N.O. premiere. Boasting a cast of 28 young people, ages 8 to 13, it is co-directed by Mikko Macchione & Fernand Jackson (who doubles as choreographer) and features Myisha Dunn, Megan & Erica Langhoff & Grayson Davis with scenic design by Ron Williams. 7:30pm, Fri, June 26; and, 3pm & 7:30pm, Fri. & Sat., thru July 12.

The Shakespeare Festival at Tulane continues its summer activities with Shakespeare's most romantic drama. Besides directing local favorites Danny Bowen, Ron Gural, Gavin Mahlie & Ken Risch, Aimee Michel has jobbed in the two leads, Eric Keith from New York and Naomi Peters from San Francisco. July 19 - Aug. 2.

SONGS FOR A NEW WORLD

Another local premiere by this enterprising group, this new musical written by Jason Robert Brown will be directed by and star Diane Lala and will feature Kerry Mendelson, Jimmy Murphy and Michael Larche. July 17 - Aug. 22.

Summer Lyric Theatre continues its season with this musical masterpiece by Rodgers and Hammerstein. Michael Howard directs Elizabeth Argus as Nellie Forbush and Richard Hutton as Emile De Becque, while Pamela Legendre conducts the large orchestra, with sets by David Raphel and choreography by Alton Geno. July 9 - 12.
