A Girl's Viewpoint
About Austin, TX
[The following article is a Lesbian's viewpoint on Lesbians, Dykes and Gays from Austin. Carrie Beal composed the feature and is a bartender who works at The Edge.]Lately I've been told that I seem more like a Gay man than a Lesbian--that I'm more of a fag than a dyke. I've been told this by both men and women. At first, when only the boys were saying it, I took it as a compliment. They were including me; I was one of the gang, just as queeny and bitchy as everyone else.
Recently, though, some of my Lesbian friends have made the same comment. I'm insulted. I'm not one of the girls any more. Somehow I'm not Lesbian enough--I'm more like a fag--and they're saying that I don't fit in with them any more. Could this be why I'm not getting laid? Damn, it's not right that politics should figure so heavily in sexual activity.
It makes me wonder, though, what it means to act more like a fag than a dyke or vice versa. How does a fag act? A dyke? I still enjoy the same kinds of things: cooking, drinking, entertaining, art, music, and literature. These seem like generic Gay favorites not specific to either Lesbian or Gay men. And of course I still love women. This should be the only thing that distinguishes me as a Lesbian. And why do my friends think of me either positively or negatively as more of a fag and less of a dyke? What's so great (or horrible) about acting like a fag? And what's so great (or horrible) about acting like a dyke? We're all the same-a bunch of snotty, uptight queers."
