Metropolitan Community Church News

NAME CHANGE: At the annual congregational meeting which took place in June, the MCC congregation voted to change the name of the church from "Vieux Carre' MCC" to "MCC of Greater New Orleans." "Vieux Carre'" means "old square" and refers to the section of New Orleans known as the French Quarter. The new name more accurately describes the population which the church serves. MCC's COMMUNITY SOCIAL PROGRAM: The 12:30pm Social Hour on the last Sun. of each month at MCCGNO has been expanded so that it not only includes the sharing of a monthly birthday cake, but has a theme for additional food and activities. July's theme will be Banana Split Sunday. The church supplies the ice cream and bananas, and you bring your favorite toppings and a friend. MCC WORLD JUBILEE: Representatives from the local MCC congregation are making plans to attend the 19th annual General Conference to be held in downtown Los Angeles July 11-17. The celebration will begin on Sun. morning in West Hollywood with the dedication of the UFMCC's new World Center and "mother" church. The rest of the week is packed with opportunities for the thousands that will gather for worship, workshops, featured speakers and special events. Vive la FrancoFete!

The State Office of Tourism's year-long celebration of 300 years of historical and cultural connections between the French-speaking world and Louisiana has inspired two unique events for the city this July-a French Connection Concert on July 14 and a Muscadet Wine Festival on July 30.

The French Connection Concert on Wed., July 14, will celebrate the French National Holiday of Bastille Day with a free concert at 8pm at the House of Blues which will feature Boukan Ginan ("fire from Africa") from Haiti and Sunpie and the Louisiana Sunspots.

The Muscadet Festival, an impressionist-themed event, will take place on Fri., July 30, from 4:30 - 10pm when Le Cardinal, a wooden sailboat carrying a cargo of Muscadet wine, 50 wine makers, musicians, actors and dancers in period costumes, arrives at Woldenberg Riverfront Park. The free public celebration will include an array of traditional French activities, including a barrel rolling demonstration, a waiters' race, painting contest, folk dancing, and the Petanque, a traditional French bowling game. The centerpiece of the event will be "La Guinguette", a French style open-air cafe which will serve Muscadet wine and seafood dishes. The evening will conclude with a performance by Deacon John & the Ivories from 8 - 10pm.
