Alex's Realm--
Rainbow Award Winner Par Excellance"My name is Alex. I live in Ohio. I turned fifteen years of age on May 5th. Three years ago I was adopted into a very good family. Prior to those three years I was a victim of sexual, emotional and physical abuse. I will talk about those years, not only to make you, the reader, understand what child abuse can do, but also to hopefully help others who are or have been victims of abuse. Some of the details of these writings may seem horrific and writing about them is not an easy task, as I find myself still trembling as I put to words my life; however, each time I confront those monsters from my past, I bring the abuse out of the darkness, into the light where it loses its power...."
This is the opening paragraph of a web page called Alex's Realm , one of twenty-one that were awarded the Rainbow Award for the month of July. That it is created and maintained by a fifteen-year-old is not too unique-even with its state-of-art Java applets and two-color format-but that it contains clear, well-crafted prose AND poetry by one so young, who has lived a nightmare during two-thirds of his young life, is truly astonishing.
We have evaluated hundreds of Web sites in the two years we've been giving out our Rainbow Award, but none has affected us quite as much as this one. In spite of horrendous abuse suffered from infancy to puberty, that resulted in partial hearing loss, this is a unique American story of one dysfunctional family and one compassionate family and how innocence lost can be recovered through love and understanding.
For added effect, make sure you crank up your speakers--Alex's choice of music will bring tears of anger, and joy, to your eyes.
