A FUNNY THING HAPPENED ON THE WAY TO THE FORUM

Sonny Borey and Derek Franklin direct this popular musical spoof of Roman comedy which boasts a book by Larry Gelbart and Burt Shevelove with music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim. Karen Hebert is the choreograper; Derek Franklin, music, vocal and co- director; Debbie Simeon, costume designer; Allen Rusnick and Paul Gulotta, set designer; and, Daniel Zimmer, lighting designer. AT THE CLUB TOOT SWEET ON BOURBON STREET

The terrific trio that gave us Daryl's Perils has struck again. With book and lyrics by Ricky Graham and David Cuthbert and music by Harry Mayronne, Jr., and direction by Ricky Graham, a brand-new musical comedy about Bourbon Street entertainers, circa 1958, hits the boards. Starring Becky Allen as Busty Rusty Russell, the Saucy Sophisticate of Song who has organized a Bail Bond Benefit for her SOS fund (Save Our Strippers), and Michael Bennett as Buddy Ray, the erascible emcee of this vaudeville turn, the show features Renee Maxwell as Dixie Lee Barrymore, the Bernhardt of Burlesque, Sean Patterson as My-O-My star Dani Delmar, the dance team of Lothar and Lupe (Roy Haylock, who also doubles as costume designer), with Chris Wecklein, Veronica Giacano, Lara Nelms, Troi Bechet, Amanda Hebert and Phil Blunt as a heckler. Chris Jones does the scenery and lighting. Fri., 8pm; Sat., 6:30pm & 9pm; thru Aug. 15.

CLASS OF '70SOMETHING

Carl Walker reprises his hit musical revue of songs from the 70s that played this venue two years ago. With musical direction by Jack Fowler, costumes by Roy Haylock and Charlotte Lang and promising a more elaborate set than the original by designer Ron Williams, this edition boasts the return of Wess Hughes, Charlotte Lang and Danon Smith from the original production. The newbies are: Anthony Bailey, Eddie Collins, Randy Juneau, Daniel Morgan, Cynthia Owen (returning to New Orleans) & Dorian Rush. Thurs. & Fri., 8pm; Sat., 6pm & 9pm; Sun., 3pm.

THE COMPLEAT WORKS OF WILLM SHKSPR (ABRIDGED)

Chase Productions, Ltd. begins a renewal of the Children's Corner at Le Petit, now called Director's Studio, with the New Orleans premier of this mad-cap condensation of the Bard's canon written by Daniel Singer, Jess Winfield and Adam Long and directed by Chase Waites and featuring Robert M. Montgomery, Gary Rucker and Lance Spellerberg. Thurs.-Sat., 8pm; Sun., 2pm thru July 26. Thurs., half-price "Theatre Appreciation Nights."

THE ELEPHANT MAN

The Actor's Box, founded by Douglas M. Griffin, Michael Arata and Mark Krasnoff presents Bernard Pomerance's Tony-winning, touching drama about a Victorian freak, John Merrick, and the doctor who befriends and helps him. Douglas M. Griffin makes his directorial debut with Mark Krasnoff portraying Merrick and Michael Arata as Dr. Treves. Also in the cast are Dane Rhodes, Peter Gabb, Katherine Keberlein and Veronica Rusell. Glen S. Mehn designs the sets and lighting and Jeanne Cwiklik creates the costumes. Thurs. - Sun., 8pm, July 24 - Aug. 9. ("Actors Night" Aug. 3.)

MEET ME IN ST. LOUIS

st. louis Summer Lyric's final musical, is an adaptation of the hit Vincente Minnelli/Judy Garland movie written by Sally Benson. The stage adaptation is by Hugh Wheeler with the film's songs by Hugh Martin and Ralph Blaine, which include "The Trolley Song","Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas" and, of course, the title song. Jennifer Douglas Gray essays the Garland role of daughter Esther and Daryl Vaughan is her stern father. Others in the large cast include Joel David Gray, Terri Gervais, Kimberly Wagner, John Lovett, Mildred Hong and Leonard Raybon. James Miller directs; Beverly Trask choreographs, Rick Paul does the sets; and, Elizabeth Parent, the costumes. July 30- Aug. 2, 8 pm. 2pm Sun. matinee.

The Ethiopian Theater celebrates its 25th Anniversary with August Wilson's Pulitzer Prize-winning drama about a family heirloom and attempts to sell it. It is directed by Jomo Kenyatt-Bean and features Anthony Bean, Harold Evans, and Gwendolyn Foxworth, with Oneal A. Isaac, Lloyd Martin, Tiara Lewis, Rolexis Delaney and Jennifer Jones. The Shakespeare Festival at Tulane continues its summer activities with Shakespeare's most romantic drama. SONGS FOR A NEW WORLD

Another local premiere by enterprising producer Trish Denmark, this new soft rock musical written by Jason Robert Brown will be directed by and star Diane Lala and will feature Kerry Mendelson, Jimmy Murphy and Michael Larche. Opens July 17; Thurs.-Sat., 8pm, thru Aug. 22.

THE BOYS FROM SYRACUSE

Ty Tracy does his annual Summer Youth Workshop production utilizing the budding talents of the city's younger thespians focusing, this year, on George Abbott's adaptation of Shakespeare's The Comedy of Errors loaded with one of Rodgers and Hart's more memorable scores ("This Can't Be Love," "Sing For Your Supper" and "Falling In Love With Love"). Leading the cast of over 40 are Robert Edgecombe, Mark Weinberg, Jermaine Keelen, Jason George, Nori Pritchard, Jennifer Carriere, Katy Weatherly, Karen Bienert, Margaret Prat, Chase Kamata and Sarah Stickney. Gloria Fallo is music and vocal director with choreography by Leo Jones, sets and lighting by Phil Wagar and costumes by Bob Bruce. Aug. 13 thru 30; Thurs. - Sat., 8pm; Sun., 2pm.

DARK OF THE MOON

Susan Muth, assisted by Ferne B. Kistner, directs this 1945 chestnut by William Berney and Howard Richardson, under their Kimu Productions banner, at Anne Rice's unique "facility." Set in the Smokey Mountains, Dark Of The Moon is a haunting tale of the forces of dark and light where the tensions of the mountain community and the supernatural world clash over an ill-fated love affair. The play features Sam Shanks, Brandi Bates, Michael Rowen, Keith Yancy and Amy Limberg. Aug. 7 ($50. Gala Opening) & 8, 8pm; Aug.9, 2pm.

Summer Stages ends its two play season with this soft rock musical collage about growing up in the inner city. Adapted from the writings of New York City kids by Robert Livingston and Herb Shapiro and with music by Gary William Friedman and lyrics by Will Holt, it is co-directed by Mikko Macchione & Fernand Jackson. Aug. 7 - 23.
