Bolshoi Ballet
to Visit N.O. during Pride WeekThe New Orleans Ballet Association has pulled a real coup in booking Russia's famed Bolshoi (means "Big" in Russian) Ballet for one performance only on Fri., Sept. 24 (the beginning night of the Alliance of Pride's annual PrideFest in Armstrong Park), at 8pm at the Mahalia Jackson Theatre of the Performing Arts in Armstrong Park.
This is the second U.S. tour and this tour will play in only 25 cities besides New Orleans, which, as of press time, was the only Gulf Coast venue scheduled.
Titled Bolshoi "The Classical Collection," and hosted by NOBA and coinciding with the Bolshoi's 223rd season in Moscow, "The Classical Collection" features a high caliber ensemble of 24 dazzling dancers accompanied by a live chamber-size orchestra. The presentation offers a once-in-a-lifetime program including the dynamic Don Quixote Suite, the rarely seen adagio from Spartacus, the pas de deux from Le Corsaire; the Dying Swan solo from Swan Lake and more.
In the Spring of 1995, the outstanding lead principal dancer, Vladimir Vasiliev, became the head of the Bolshoi Theatre. It was his task to preserve the tradition of Russian classical dance, celebrated the world over as the foundation of great artistic achievements in ballet. On the heals of a stunning and successful tour in the spring of 1998, Mr. Vasiliev has again set a company to tour the U.S.
In Moscow, The famed company utilizes up to 300 dancers and 400 backstage staff on call for its massive productions. The first dancers of the Bolshoi were principally recruited from the Moscow Orphanage and trained by an Italian ballet master, Filippo Beccari. In 1773, Beccari began dance classes for these orphans and, of the 62 pupils with whom he worked, no less than 24 were judged suitable for the stage three years later. In 1776, the first young Moscovite dancers made their debuts. Thus began the Moscow Ballet.
The Bolshoi Theatre, opened in the mid 1800's as a home for the Bolshoi Ballet, stands in the ranks along side Paris Grand Opera and la Scala in Milan as one of the best musical theatres in the world. Its school has trained some of the finest dancers in history while its stage has been graced by some of the world's most celebrated ballets, including the original staging of Swan Lake and many works by famed Russian choreographer Marius Petipa. The Bolshoi has also presented many of Russia's star ballerinas of the 19th and 20th centuries.
