pride fest '98 update

Alliance of Pride is pleased to announce PrideFest 98, the 19th Annual Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual & Transgender Pride Celebration Festival and Parade. The festival will be held in Armstrong Park, entrance at St. Ann & N. Rampart, Sept. 26 & 27. This year's theme is Planet Pride. Grand Marshals are Toni Pizanie and Stewart Butler, two well known political activists. The honorary Grand Marshals are Miss Dixie Fasnacht and the late Andy Boudreaux.

gms Sat., Sept. 26, is dedicated to the Stonewall Riots that occurred outside the Stonewall Inn, a Gay bar in Greenwich Village on June 27, 1969. Sun., Sept. 27, is dedicated to National Coming Out Day (officially Oct. 11th) as well as National Gay History Month (October).

There will be both the Main Stage with a host of live bands and a variety of entertainment as well as the Marketplace, with loads of great merchandise, and the Food Court. The Alliance has added many new attractions which will include a Country/Western dance tent, a special "drag" stage, Speaker's Hill (for organizations and political groups), a gospel tent, an art exhibit and a whole lot more! There will also be paid, secured parking available!

This year's fundraising efforts are to be commended. The Gay bar community has contributed mightily to help raise the necessary funds for such a giant festival. Parties already held, and the amounts raised are as follows: Mar. 28, White Heat "Sun" Party, Bourbon Pub/Parade, $1,024.00; May 15, Pluto Party, Wolfendale's, $1,080.00; May 17; Heavenly Lust, Footloose, $257.00; May 24, You Bet Uranus, Rawhide 2010, $460.00; June 13, The Black Hole, Cafe Lafitte's, $436.00; and, July 18, Night of 1,000 Stars, Good Friends, $1,115.00.

Upcoming parties are: Aug. 14, 10pm-2am, The Milky Way, Rubyfruit Jungle; Aug. 21, 9pm-til, Wigs In Space, Lucky Cheng's; Aug 22, 10pm-til, Full Moon, Full Moon; Aug. 28; It's A Small World, Angles (Metairie); Aug 30, Heavenly Bodies, Footloose; Sept. 18, The Red Planet -Mars, Cheers; and, Sept 19, Venus, Oz. Along with these fantastic parties, more festivities have been planned to lead up to the festival weekend. Sun., Sept. 13 from 4:30-7:30pm will be the PrideFest 98 Rock N'Bowl with entertainment by Sherreece. Also in Sept. is the "Wigs On Wheels" Skating Party at Airline Skate Center.

All proceeds for the events go into the festival's general fund.
