100,000 Revelers Expected for Southern Decadence

Southern Decadence XXXI is expected to bring in as many as 100,000 revelers, the same estimated figure as last year's weeklong celebration. It is believed that the 2001 economic impact could have well exceeded $80 million, based on an $800 per person conservative spending average.

Although this is the 31st Southern Decadence celebration, this is actually the 30th parade and only the 29th year with a grand marshal. See the History of Decadence on page M-8 for more info.

Executive Director of the Human Relations Commission, Larry Bagneris, Jr., is to be applauded for the immense effort he has put forth behind the scenes to ensure that visitors and locals will enjoy a safe Southern Decadence. Bagneris has worked with the mayor's office, city council, police department, sanitation department, streets department and local businesses to achieve this goal.

See Tips and Tricks on page M-12 offering other suggestions for the safety of visitors and locals alike.
