Swine Palace Productions begins its '98 season with the American premiere of adapter/director Edward Kemp's production of William Faulkner's classic novel about a poor family's journey across the Deep South to fulfill the last wish of their dying mother. Previously created for the Young Vic Theatre in London, this production will feature New Orleans actor Mark McLaughlin, Cristin Cunningham, J.P. Delahoussaye, Preston Lorio and Tony Marble, among many. Barry Kyle, founding Artistic Director of Swine Palace and Marc Sherrel design the sets; Louis Gagliano, the lighting; Simone C. The terrific trio that gave us Daryl's Perils has struck again. With book and lyrics by Ricky Graham and David Cuthbert and music by Harry Mayronne, Jr., and direction by Ricky Graham, a brand-new musical comedy about Bourbon Street entertainers, circa 1958, hits the boards. Starring Becky Allen as Busty Rusty Russell, the Saucy Sophisticate of Song who has organized a Bail Bond Benefit for her SOS fund (Save Our Strippers), and Michael Bennett as Buddy Ray, the erascible emcee of this vaudeville turn, the show features Renee Maxwell as Dixie Lee Barrymore, the Brernhardt of Burlesque, Sean Patterson as My-O-My star Dani Delmar, the dance team of Lothar and Lupe (Roy Haylock, who also doubles as costume designer), with Chris Wecklein, Veronica Giacano, Lara Nelms, Troi Bechet, Amanda Hebert and Phil Blunt as a heckler. Dramarama, presented by DramaRama, Inc., the Contemporary Arts Center, in cooperation with the Louisiana Children's Museum, 420 Julia St., is New Orleans' only theatre, dance and performance festival, which will be presented Sat., Sept. 12 from 6pm to midnight at the CAC and at the Children's Museum and the CAC on Sat. & Sun. afternoons, Sept. 12 & 13. This year's theatrical smorgasbord features more than fifty performances on 6 stages with hundreds of performers offering selections from five to thirty minutes. Featured artists are: The Anne Burr Dance Co., Valentine Pierce's Backpocket Poets, the Educational India Foundation, the Gas Tank Orchestra with the Spontaneous Dumajiggers, Hightower and Sparks theatre group, mikko presents, dancer/choreographer Gabrielle Pickard and performance artist Jose Torres Tama and the very popular One Minute Play Contest. Neil Simon gender-swaps his best comedy about two dysfunctional, middle-aged roommates, the better to add more money-earning life to his annuity. This is a take-off of a take-off. Instead of Oscar and Felix there's Ollie (Sandy Bravender) and Florence (Gia Rabito). This version is directed by Dane Rhodes and features Doris Methe, Theresa Dellucky, Terrell Robinson, Danon Dastague and Glen Gomez. Sonny Borey begins his tenure as Le Petit's new artistic director with this theatrical makeover of the 1933 Warner Bros. film about a sweet young understudy who gets her big break when the star is unable to go on. With songs like "We're In The Money" and "Lullaby Of Broadway," the score is by Harry Warren and Al Dubin with book by Michael Stewart and Mark Bramble. This production will star Mandy Zirkenbach as Peggy Sawyer, the understudy, Susan Domangue as Dorothy Brock, the star, with Ken Risch as Julian Marsh, the director and Peggy's love interest, Billy Lawler, played by Patrick Mendelson. This Cole Porter musical, with book by Timothy Crouse and John Weidman, all about gangsters and true love on board a 20's ocean liner, kicks off the season. Directed and choreographed by Alton Geno, it features Ann Casey as Reno Sweeney, with Kris Shaw, Kasey Marino, Walter Bost, Stephen LaDow, Amanda Norman-Rucker, Ashley Smetherman and Linda Hubschen. Jan Schluter is music director, while Robert Self does the ship set, Daniel Zimmer lights it and Trish McLain creates the period gard. Sept. 18 - Oct. 11.LOVE LETTERS
