LGCCNO Hosts Membership Party

The lovely patio of the Claiborne Mansion was the setting for the Lesbian & Gay Community Center of New Orleans membership and volunteer recognition party. There was a pleasant breeze wafting through the trees which made this summer evening gathering enjoyable. Jim Hildebrand greeted guests at the drive entrance and counted 82 persons in attendance.

The pool area was the scene of Robert Udick's presentations to honor volunteers. Jeanne LeBlanc was awarded the Volunteer of the Year Award. For his outstanding work, Jim Hildebrand was given the Volunteer of the Millennium Award. Eighteen volunteers received certificates of appreciation. The Center now boasts 35 volunteers who are keeping the Center open seven days a week.

The committee that assured a successful party was comprised of Jinnie Nicotera, Jim Hildebrand, Rita Lawrence, Crystal Little, Eddie Domingue and Dee Martin. Jinnie drafted me into the ranks of the party worker volunteers for which I owe her a debt of thanks. Not only did I get the opportunity to work in the air-conditioned kitchen, before the party got into full swing, I was honored to meet and enjoy some wonderful young people who are the backbone of the Center today.

The cabana area was filled with festive decorations, delectable snacks, champagne punch, sherbet punch and beer. Music filled the air along with laughter and conversation. This was an excellent time for visiting and meeting newcomers to this area.

The Board and Party Committee wish to thank the following for their help: Alan Calderon, Todd Pradier, Larry Lavigne, Tom Loesch, Noel Seavey, Bill Hedel, Natasha Wilson, Josh Norris, Tomi Kolarich, Ken Errara, Brad Kelly, Michael DesJardins, Theron Martin, Jamye Freeman, Dana Green, Bruce Hebert, Carlos Castillo, Larry Stillings, Gregg Lutz, Carlos Martinez, Drex Ferguson, Jeffrey Harrell, & Judy Weaver. Special thanks to Ken Grand Pre' of Wood Enterprises for Bud Light donation and Seth Stringer of Good Friends Bar for decoration assistance.

Radical Lesbian Feminist Uprising!

A gathering of radical Lesbian feminists is scheduled for Oct. 1-4 in a rural conference center/camp north of Kansas City, MO. The purpose of this gathering is to discuss and practice concepts. The organizers consider sadomasochism and pornography to be patriarchal tools that condone violence.

Attendees are asked to refrain from wearing scented body products (soap, shampoo, deodorant, cologne, perfume, etc.) or clothes scented by detergents or fabric softeners. This request is being made to protect anyone from becoming ill from exposure to such products.

Accommodations include multiple occupancy rooms with bunk beds. A few private rooms are available. Heat, air-conditioning and hot showers are included. Wheelchair accessible rooms are limited.

Activities will include workshops, small group discussions, community meetings, good food (vegetarian, vegan options) and home grown entertainment.
