Magnolia Cotillion XXV
Raises Thousands For NO/AIDS Walk

Guests from near and far came to enjoy Magnolia Cotillion XXV honoring Rip and Marsha Naquin Delain's 25th silver anniversary. Thousands of dollars are raised each year benefiting NO/AIDS Walk. With donations arriving daily, the final tally will not be available until the NO/AIDS Walk on Sept. 19. The previous eight Cotillions have raised over $55,000 for the Walk.

The threatening sky gave way to moonlight as the sultry evening's activities got underway. Toni Pizanni welcomed guests and accepted donations to the NO/AIDS Walk in the downstairs Ambush redecorated offices. Guests were treated to wasabi and flying fish roe, hummus, guacamole and salsa here.

The honored couple welcomed guests to the second level where the three-tiered white cake with silver wedding bells was the centerpiece of a lavishly decorated table. It was here at 9pm that the couple cut the cake and again pledged their eternal love for each other with the traditional taste of cake from each other.

Rip wore a white dinner jacket with black pants, a "nappy Naquin pin" on the left lapel, black bow tie, and black shoes. Marsha was serenely beautiful in her silver Jackie-O style gown with plunging neckline accented by her grandmother's antique platinum diamond stick pin. Her hair was done in an upsweep style by Arthur Severio of Arthur's House of Glamour, and her dangling rhinestone earrings sparkled like magic. Her shoes were Cinderella glass slippers.

Inside the parlor and dining room areas, guests relaxed in old world charm in a setting of pomp and color. The main courses in the dining room included Shrimp Marsha, Shrimp Antipasto complete with marinated artichoke hearts and mushrooms, Italian meatballs, gourmet meat and cheeses, pinwheel sandwiches and roasted eggplant and garlic spread served with pita. The table was decorated with a huge fragrant and gorgeous floral arrangement courtesy of Tommy's Flowers. Guests were also allowed to mingle on the balcony overlooking Bourbon Street from Canal to Esplanade.

As with most of the events that occur at this Bourbon Street mansion, all areas were decorated elaborately. The entranceway contained many of the balcony decorations from previous Mardi Gras celebrations. The two red ribbons are striking additions to this area, and the small iron table and chairs with its magnolia arrangement and fountain added a nice touch of elegance.

The patio was stifling from the heat of the day, but guests were treated to the wonders of a magical garden of four o'clocks, giant elephant ears, hammerhead ivy, caladiums, cast iron plants, ivys, hidden ginger, and asparagus fern. The fountain added charm as did the lights, which twinkled above the patio. Benches, chairs, and a covered outdoor table were also part of the patio setting.

Drinks were served in Belle Lain's Magnolia Bar. The Magnolia Bar is a pleasant part of this complex containing pictures of previous King Cake queens, NO/AIDS posters, miniature magnolias, an elaborate silk floral display, and a settee with ornate grillwork.

Guests also noted the addition of a new leaded crystal doorway on the first level making a dramatic entrance to the second and third levels of the private Naquin-Delain home. The magnolia arrangement added a touch of class to this entrance.

The first Magnolia Cotillion was held on Aug. 17, 1974, and the past eight Cotillions have benefited the NO/AIDS Walk. Many of those people who could not attend were kind enough to remember the less fortunate with donations to this worthy cause. The Magnolia Cotillion is just another way the philanthropic Naquin-Delain's give back to the community, a community they serve with pride and dignity.
