Visit Gay Houston

Volume 16/Issue 19

by China Doll
Houston, Texas

First of all, I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the staff at Ambush and the people of New Orleans for such a warm welcome at the Southern Decadence XXVI! Here in the Lone Star State, Houston is the biggest city around. And let me assure you that, in Houston, you won't miss anything. For the next month or so, Houston will welcome the Miss Texas America Pageant! Miss Texas America has not been held here for over twenty years. It will be at Toyz Disco on Sept. 23, 24, & 25. Some of the fabulous entertainers include Miss Gay America, Maya Montana, Donna Day, Kofi, and many, many more. With a capacity of over 300 people, and with a very large dance floor and performance stage, Toyz is located at 5322 Glenmont.

Rich's sponsored a night to remember: "Studio 54." Disco Diva Thelma Houston was the highlight of the evening. If you missed this event, then you really missed out on a good time! For those of you in the Houston crowd who made it out that evening, Rich's sends their thanks! Midtowne Spa Houston has really pleased their customers. At the beginning of the month, they held a survey to see which Adult Superstar their customers would like to see "in the flesh." The results are in: Mega Superstar J.T. Sloan. Now, where else in the world you can get what you ask for? Only at Midtowne Spa of course. Stay tuned to Ambush for pictures.

In October, music and art created by, for and about women will be showcased at the Fourth Annual Houston Women's Festival Sat., Oct. 24. The festival provides an opportunity for women and friends to gather in a relaxed social setting to enjoy the talents that our community has to share. In a shaded garden a colorful marketplace will be set up where craftswomen, businesswomen and organizations will offer information and handmade wares. Jewelry, pottery, beadwork and leather goods are just some of the items that will be displayed. Meanwhile local, regional and nationally known musicians will perform original music and comedy. The show begins at 1:30pm with respected guitarist Kat Drake, accompanied by local favorite Robin Borthwick on drums. At 2:30pm Mary Catherine Reynolds takes the stage. Mary was voted best female vocalist in Oklahoma City four years in a row. At 3:30pm rising star Liviya Compean will offer her blend of rock, funk and Latin beats. Ana Egge is next at 4:30pm-many may remember her from her 26-city tour with Shawn Colvin earlier this year. Rounding out the daytime show is Lesbian icon Gretchen Phillips performing with Terri Lord and Darcee Douglas. The day stage will be hosted by Kim Sevier of TV Montrose. At 6:30pm comedienne Vickie Shaw will take the stage. Vickie has performed with some of the biggest names in comedy and is frequently featured on Olivia cruises. The first musical act of the evening is the abundantly talented Sara Hickman, who has been featured on VH-1 and in Billboard magazine. At 8pm Houston's favorite all-woman band, Cowboy's Nightmare, will share their brand of alternative country. Closing out the show from 9:30 to 11pm is Zrazy, the internationally known duo from Dublin, Ireland. Throughout the festival a multi-media art show will be featured in the indoor hall. Of particular interest will be the second annual art project by Houston's Latinas Lesbianas. The art show will also include slides, videos and work in a variety of mediums.

Vendor booths can be reserved until Oct. 1 for $50 for non-profit organizations and $70 for businesses. After Oct. 1, the price increases to $70 and $90, respectively. Advertisements in the festival event guide can be purchased for as little as $40 and are due on Sept. 25. The Houston Women's Festival will be held at Garden in the Heights, 3926 Feagan, from 1pm to midnight. Tickets are $10 in advance and will be available from Toopee's, Lobo Bookshop and Luchia's Garden beginning Oct. 1. Tickets can also be purchased at the festival for $12. For more information call 713.861.3316 or E-mail AthenaArt@aol.com.
