Houston, TexasWith Miss Texas America coming to Houston in a few days, things are getting heated. This is the first time Miss Texas America will be held here in twenty years. I'm really looking forward to it! Last year, I was judged First Alternate to Miss Southeast Texas America. On Sept. 20, a benefit was held at Lazy J's to sponsor me in this year's Miss Texas America competition. The benefit was sponsored by my promoter, Mr. Mike Burnett (Michaelay), Michael A. Johnson & Patrick Huynh (Midtowne Spa), Joe Sims (Jade Mykels), Crystal, Jeff Mechler, David, Mike & John, Daniel & Tom, Jay W. Thomas, Randy Lake, Steve, and so many of my dear friends.
Just last week, I was at the Miss Camp America Pageant, which was held here in Houston at the Cullen Hall. It was their 30th Anniversary and the theme of the evening was "Spice Up Your Life." This year, the organization raised over $70,000 for charities. Each year, members of the Foundation establish a "Designated Charity Selection Committee" to interview other 501(c) (3) AIDS related charities and to select the designated charities for the year. The Foundation presents these grants yearly at their annual production. Charities being selected as 1998 recipients of financial grants from the Miss Camp America Foundation are: The Assistance Fund, Bering Dental Clinic, Casa de Esperanza, The Montrose Clinic-Frost Eye Clinic, The NAMES Project, PWA Holiday Fund, Stevens House and Texas Children's Hospital-Camp Hope. Cast members included: Jessica Flame, Lauren Brach, Tiffany, Bernadette, Ms. Harold, Dana Van Iquity, Reina Tara, Salley Jesse Helms, Miss Casey de Mumps, and Faye Raye-who were introduced by the returning of the winners of Miss Camp America: Maxine Petty (1969), Coretta King (1970), Isabelle Gerhart (1972), Lois Lane (1975), Princess Grebe (1982), Baba Wawa (1985), Lil' Nell (1986), Lana Love (1988), Randella Licious (1990), Laverne (1991), Lucy Ball (1994), Nazamova (1995), Buffy Bayou (1996), and Ivana Starr (1997). The Master of Ceremonies was Mr. Danny Williams, who has been honored with the Cable Car Award for Entertainer of the Year, Bay Area Gold Award, Outstanding Male Comic for three years, and the Gay Community Award, Male Entertainer of the Year for six years. He has also been recognized for his community work with the Harvey Milk Award, John L. Wasserman Award and was named by the Oakland Tribune as an unsung hero. Danny's comedy is deeply personal, while at the same time it touches upon feelings that are common to all. He is particularly well-known for his ability to ad-lib and play with the audience, getting them involved in the fun. The Bay Area Reporter called him the "Funniest Comic In Town, Gay, Straight or Otherwise," and the San Francisco Examiner described his comedy as "Devastating, perceptive-and just plain funny... rich, ripe and right on stuff...." After the Pageant we all headed out to Rich's for the party. Well done job!!
