This issue is going to be mostly about Parents, Families and Friends of Lesbians and Gays, also known as PFLAG. PFLAG is an international organization with grass-roots chapters in more than 350 communities in all 50 states, and with affiliates in 12 other countries. The membership represents mothers and fathers, brothers and sisters, grandmothers and grandfathers, uncles and aunts, friends and supporters of Gay men and Lesbians. Many Lesbians and Gays are also members, joining in the work of the organization's volunteers. PFLAG works to create a society that is respectful of the diversity of human beings, educates the public about homosexuality, and fosters a deeper understanding of Gay men, Lesbians, and other families.
You might be a parent struggling to accept your Gay or Lesbian child. You might be a Gay or Lesbian wondering how or even if you can tell your parents about your sexuality. Whatever stage in the journey you are at, PFLAG Houston is here to support you in your next step. There are also other groups in the area such as H.A.T.C.H. , Twentysomething, and some others that are very helpful resources to the community.
PFLAG's mission can be summed up as Support, Education, & Advocacy. Supporting families, PFLAG works to keep families in loving relationships by helping them understand and support their Gay, Lesbian, and Bisexual members. PFLAG seeks to dispel the myths and misinformation about homosexuality by working with educators, community groups, and the general public; to this end, they have a Speakers Bureau available for corporations, religious groups, and community groups. PFLAG works to broaden the base of support for equal human and civil rights by mobilizing millions of non-Gay family members from all political, economic, and social sectors of society.
You can contact them if you want to attend their monthly meeting, are just "coming out" and want to talk to a parent of another Gay, Lesbian, or Bisexual person, need a speaker for your organization's meeting, or just want to interact with straight as well as Gay, Lesbian, and Bisexual people who share a commitment to a more just society for all.
