Tues., Dec. 1Tues., Dec. 1 is World AIDS Day. (WAD) The theme for the 11th annual World AIDS Day is `Force For Change: World AIDS Campaign with Young People'. This theme reflects the fact that worldwide five young people are infected with HIV every minute, making HIV/AIDS a very real part of everyday life for young people. Young people can and have played a vital role in HIV/AIDS prevention and support work. Young people can make a huge difference in raising awareness of HIV/AIDS by talking about HIV/AIDS in and outside school and college, by holding fundraising events for AIDS charities, or by wearing a red ribbon to show support. In and around Austin, memorials and recognition are scheduled. Austin participates in its nightclubs, restaurants and museums by hosting a Day without Art symbolizing the loss of those who have died due to HIV/AIDS. On this day, all of Austin is encouraged to participate by covering up their artwork to symbolize the great losses and by wearing Red Ribbons. Another scheduled event for World AIDS Day in Austin is sponsored by the Interfaith Care Alliance who will host an interface service of remembrance and hope from 6:00- 6:45pm. The service will be held at the Congregation Beth Israel (CBI) located at 3901 Shoal Creek Blvd. More info may be obtained by calling Interfaith at 512.459.5883. After the service at 7pm, Interfaith along with Austinite Sally Jacques and the City of Austin present a Body Count Memorial Site-Performance. This event is held at Barton Springs Pool in Zilker Park located on Barton Springs Road.
Seven Dancers are scheduled to perform with swimmers in the pool. The swimmers will be steering a lighted raft holding metal sculptures made by Austinities Mike Arnold and John Christensen. These sculptures are now on display at the Austin Museum of Art located on Congress Ave. Individuals are encouraged to come and tie Red Ribbons for lost love ones starting Nov. 23 up until Nov. 30 at the museum. Also performing at Barton Springs Pool will be the Hebrew Choir who will perform after a 15-minute mediation. Candles will surround the pool while other featured groups such as the African-American Catholic Group, the Tibetan Girl's Chorus and the Capital City Men's Choir (CCMC) along with singers from the Austin Lyric Opera perform throughout the memorial. Kirk Rice, ASA Development Director commented "It's great the World takes one day out of each year to remember the people we have lost to this disease and remember friends living daily with this disease." " But we also must remember that this is not a one day a year disease, and we must keep it in the forefront of our lives if we are ever going to irradiate it," Rice added.
Project Transitions
Features Holiday SwingThe 10th annual Holiday Swing will be hosted by Project Tran sition on Sat., Dec. 5 from 8pm until 12:30am at the Ben Hur Shrine Ballroom located at 4300 Westbank Drive. SwingTime will host music for the night, with special guest appearances by Philip Knisely and the Studebakers. Holiday Swing will feature dancing all night with free dance lessons from 7-8pm. The festivities continue with holiday hors d'oeuvres, specialty-constructed sweets, a silent action and a cash bar. A Special drawing will be held for two-round trip tickets on American Airlines with each chance sold at $5 with only 500 tickets sold for this prize. Overall Swing Tickets are $30 in advance or $35 at the door. Holiday Swing is hosted annually by Project Transitions as a fund-raiser for individuals and families living with AIDS locally in central Texas. Capital City Men's Chorus
Begins 10th AnniversaryJeffrey Jones-Ragona, Artistic Director proudly present the first concert of the Capital City Men's Chorus (CCMC) beginning their 10th Anniversary Season (the 1998-1999 Performance Season) with a Season of Light on Sat. Dec. 12th at 8:00pm. The concert will be held at the First Unitarian Universalist Church of Austin at 4700 Grover Street. In addition, an encore performance will be held on Sun., Dec. 13th at 4:00pm. Special guests include Grammy Nominee Rose Taylor, mezzo-soprano; Jaime Shpall, cantor, Temple Beth Israel; and Malcom Nelson, former CCMC Artistic Director. In addition to the concert, CCMC will debut its first compact disc recording entitled Silent Noon at the Season of Light concert. HWC Hosts Holiday Rhapsody
Coming up on Sun, Dec. 13th, the HIV Wellness Center (HWC) will host their second annual Holiday Rhapsody benefit at the Texas Union Ballroom (Grand Space) located at 2300 Guadalupe St. starting at 6pm till 10pm. Holiday Rhapsody will feature an exciting elegant evening of music, merriment and merchandise. A lavish buffet and cash bar will also be on hand. The evening's focus is on Christmas Caroling with individuals, groups, and some celebrities singing popular holiday songs. Special Guest appearances will be the Austin Babtist Women performing before they host their own Seasons of Love Christmas benefit at Rainbow Cattle Company later that night. Special commemorative songbooks will be given to each reveler. A silent action will be hosted with over $10,000 dollars in goods; services and merchandise all donated to the center for one's shopping pleasure. The event is the HWC's largest gala fundraiser for the year. Limited tickets are available for $25 per person through the HIV Wellness Center or at the door. Red & Green Party "1998 Holiday Wrap"
Set for Local CharitiesBen Parsley and Splash Productions in cooperation with Paul Parkinson as well as Ambush will host the Red and Green "1998 Holiday Wrap" theme Party held Dec 19th benefiting four local Austin Charities. The festivities start with a cocktail party and separate dance party. The cocktail party will be held at the 1920's Club located at 918 Congress Avenue from 8pm till 12am. A cash bar and free finger foods compliments of 1920's will be hosted. Celebrity drag divas of Dolly, Cher and Ann-Margaret will be singing your favorite holiday tunes. Santa's beefy helper will also be on hand to have your picture taken with at the club. Prizes will be presented at 11:30pm for best all around costume, sexiest costume and best group costume.
The party continues at 11pm till dawn with a dance circuit party with music spun by local circuit DJ Roland Belmares. The location of this dance party is TBD. Look for details in the next Ambush edition. The local charities to benefit from Red and Green include Aids Services of Austin (ASA), Project Transitions, Out Youth Austin and the HIV Wellness Center. With all proceeds donated to these charities, revelers will have their choice on which charity they wish to donate too when they purchase their tickets. Austin - Aids and HIV Services and Support Groups
There are many groups, institutions, service agencies, etc. that all play a part in the well being of Austin's and Central Texas HIV/AIDS Care. The following is not a complete list, but should help one with information and services to get the needed assistance for them or to help others.
Aids Services of Austin (ASA) provides case management, food pantry, financial assistance, such as rent/mortgage and utility and legal assistance, clothing, transportation assistance, Nurse Aide Care, Dental and medical referrals, buddy/helper and referrals to other agencies. ASA is the biggest organization in Austin ending up with Private Fundraising Dollars such as fundraisers as there primary four sponsored throughout the year including: Viva Las Vegas, Austin Festival of Dance, AIDS Walk, Sansing Dental Clinic Black Tie Gala. These four events alone raised a total of $425,000. Additional fundraisers from the community total their private fundraising dollars = $925,000. From the Public sector, Dollars like from the Ryan White Foundation -Federal, State, County and City funds gather in some $2.4 Million -1998 Projections / totaling around $3.3 Million for ASA. HIV Wellness Center (HWC) provides access to holistic health care for over 600 people living with HIV in Austin and the surrounding areas for over 10 years. A small administrative staff coordinates many services to encourage clients to build a healthier lifestyle over overall "wellness" in all areas utilizing a combination of emotional support, education, stress management, acupuncture, massage, chiropractic, energy work, and classes in physical conditioning, yoga and meditation. The agency relies on the generous assistance of many individual volunteers, including over 40 local practitioners who donate all or a portion of their fees so that clients can access their services without financial barriers. Community support is vital, both financial and through volunteer assistance. Contributions can be submitted to HWC located at 4301-B North IH-35, Austin, TX 77822-512.467.0088.
C.A.R.E. Program (ATCMHMR) provides Journey Outpatient Treatment Programs including harm reduction with the needle exchange program, holistic care, support networks, acu-detox, financial assistance, Reiki sessions, support groups and one on one counseling, substance abuse programs, therapy care, HIV testing. CARE/Journey is located at 1633 East 2nd Street -512.473-2273.
Central Austin Community Organization or (C.E.A.C.O.) provides services such as rent/mortgage assistance, Gas utility assistance, food pantry, clothing, transportation assistance, case management, health counseling, HIV Testing and public education. They are located at 1715 East education. Located at 1715 E. 6th Street 512.472.5575.
Community Action AIDS Services Program provides programs available to Travis and the surrounding counties with case management, HIV testing, rent and utility assistance, transportation, emergency medial prescriptions, food and clothing referrals, support groups, nutritional/wellness info and other services. Community AIDS Resources and Education provides various resources and education on HIV and AIDS. They are located at 1631B East 2nd Street -512.473-2273.
David Powell Health Center provides Medical Health Care, support and counseling, rent, food and clothing assistance. They are located at 1000 Toyath - 512.469.7200.
E.C. Wood Foundation - The E.C. Wood foundation, a nonprofit organization, provides services to professional healthcare providers working with individuals living with HIV or AIDS. They may be contacted at 512.451.9807.
INFORME SIDA / ALLGO - The Austin Latino/a Lesbian Gay Organization (ALLGO) offers services and events for gays and lesbians in the Hispanic and African American communities. Informe SIDA is their HIV/AIDS education and prevention agency, which focuses on outreach and early case management, financial, support, counseling, transportation, food, and referrals to other agencies. They are located at 1715 East 6th Street, Suite #112 - 512.472.2001.
Interfaith AIDS Care Teams - provides limited resources in meals, transportation, home visits (help with household chores and emotional support) and HIV/AIDS education to churches. They may be contacted at 512.472.4934.
Interfaith Care Alliance - formed from local congregations providing practical and emotional support for people living with HIV and AIDS, as well as their families and friends. They may be contacted at 512.459.5883.
Octopus Club specializes in throwing parties and raising money for charity. Every dime the club raises at its parties go directly to the Paul Kirby Fund, which serves as an emergency fund for people with AIDS. Contact Octopus Club at 512.452.7210 or write them at PO Box 4874, Austin, TX 8765-4874. Out Youth Austin provides Peer Support for gay and lesbian, bisexual and questioning youths. Pediatric AIDS League of Austin provides services such as food pantry, clothing, child care, transportation, medical referrals, health counseling and support groups to mothers and children afflicted with HIV/AIDS. They can be contacted by calling 512.892.4776.
Project Transitions provides supportive living assistance and services and hospice care. They are located at by calling 512.454.8646.
Texas HIV/STD Medication Program - provides for administration of the AIDS Drug Assistance Program (ADAP) in Texas. They are located at 1100 West 49th St - 512.490.2510.
Texas Human Rights Foundation provides assistance, which fights discrimination against persons with HIV/AIDS through legal assistance and lawyer referrals. They may be contacted at 512.479.THRF (8473).
