A Farewell to Robert "Bobby" Merrill (1969 – 2003)

Once again not only myself, but also our entire community, has suffered the loss of one of our most beloved and talented friends. "Bobby" Merrill, hairstylist extraordinaire, passed away on Saturday morning Dec. 6. To those of us who knew and loved him, he will always be remembered for his kind words, broad smile and his unwavering friendship. He was one of those people who was
always there whenever needed, working endlessly behind the scenes not expecting recognition, as he had for more than one Southern Decadence grand marshal.
I spoke with his former lover this afternoon, Ed Drevar. They had been together for over five years and when their relationship came to an end, they remained best of friends and roommates. I relate this only to let those who may not have known him to see just how likeable a person he was. Ed told me that Bobby came home that evening just as he was about to retire for the night himself. He said they spoke a few words to each other and Bobby went to bed. It is reassuring to me, as I am sure it is to all his friends, to know that he passed peacefully in his sleep.
Bobby was co-owner of the newly opened Kolors Hair Salon on Rampart Street. A well-established stylist in the French Quarter, he was originally from Redville, Colorado. His mother Bea and his father Don of Oakland, Colorado, and a sister Debbie of Vale, Colorado survives him, as well as Ed and all his extended "family". Though I had known him for just a few years I am proud to consider myself part of his extended family.
We who knew him will always keep him in our memories and hearts. He will be missed for sure, but he will never be forgotten.
