Austin & Ambush -
One Year Young

One year ago, on Dec. 12, Ambush Magazine (Vol. 15, Issue 25) was distributed in Austin with a column entitled: "Tales of Steers and Queers from Texas." Eight pictures were featured inside that first edition in Austin EXpress, most taken by Chris Healy. Five hundred copies were circulated in various Austin Gay bars. These are now considered a commemorative souvenir. No Austin ads were sold for that edition. During 1997, AmbushOnline was approaching 17 million unique hits per month with its Web sites via www.ambushonline.com and www.ambushmag.com. Today, these Web sites are approaching over 50 million unique hits per month under the conglomerate Web site known as www.gayworld.net.

Since that edition, Ambush in Austin has grown from a limited edition publication test-marketed in Texas to a growing 2000 issue circulation distributed biweekly in Austin. Ambush has succeeded as Austin's entertainment flamboyant Gulf South publication. Total circulation is 10,000 with annual readership of 650,000. Ambush is headquartered in New Orleans, LA, with coverage ranging from Pensacola, Atlanta, Louisiana coverage of New Orleans, Baton Rouge, Lafayette, Monroe, and into Texas with Austin. Through the Steers and Queers column to the two plus Ambush EXpress pictorial pages, to display advertisements, classifieds and schedule of daily events, Ambush has steadily grown in Austin and has given much back to the Austin community via grants and support.

Ambush has awarded over $30,710 in Austin organizational AMgrants [Ambush Advertising Grant Donations] to various charities, organizations and events throughout 1998 that have supported Ambush Mag 2000 and AMBUSHonLINE. Among these organizations were, (ASA) AIDS Services of Austin, (MCC) Metropolitan Community Church/Austin, Out Youth Austin, Team Austin and (TGRA) Texas Gay Rodeo Association, Project Transitions and the United Court of Austin. In addition, Ambush has been an active member of the Austin Tavern Guild and has also co-sponsored many events. These events included Austin Ambush Trivia Contest, First Splash, Meltdown '98, Pride '98, Fourth of July Picnic, AGLIFF, Last Splash, RIP'D '98, AIDS Walk, Texas Coming Out Day, Austin DJ Party, World AIDS Day and the upcoming Red and Green Party.

Lastly, Ambush created Austin online at www.gayaustin.net. Ambush continues to strive as Austin's #1 Flamboyant Gay/Lesbian, Bisexual & Transgendered Tabloid. Thank you Austin for your continued support and readership. Look for 1998 Austin Reflections in the last edition of this year distributed Christmas Week. Happy Christmas and on to 1999 and the Millenium.

Cornerstone Community Center
Needs Funding

Cornerstone Gay and Lesbian Center, Austin's own Gay community center located at Red River and 12th Streets, needs Austin's support which is vital, both financially and through volunteer assistance before the end of the year to keep their doors open. Due to high building maintenance and vacancy in tenant space, some $60,000 is needed for funding and program initiatives. Secondly, at least 10 individuals are needed to assume board positions before Jan. 1. Donnie Young, current acting director, stated that the future of the center is up to the community. Cornerstone provides a center that promotes programs, businesses, community groups and a resource network for and by the Greater-Austin Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgendered community. The community is encouraged to help assist this center by mailing contributions to 1117 Red River, Austin, TX 78704. Persons interested in board positions should send a letter of interest and resume to the same address or by fax at 512.708.1510 or E-mail at cnrstone@io.com.
