LAFAYETTE, LOUISIANA

With Mardi Gras only a week away, we are in the heart of Carnival season. There has been everything from Mardi Gras balls to wild dance parties, and thatís just the beginning of everything Acadiana has in store. On Jan. 22, the Royal Order of Unicorn held its twenty-first annual Bal Masque. The theme this year was "The Greatest Show on Earth," and believe me when I tell you that is exactly what they aimed for. It was a spectacular event with all your favorite faces from the gay community. Kofi emceed the event and as always she did a wonderful job. This yearís Captain and Co-captain, Pamalia Mosa and Angie Clause, along with the rest of the krewe went all out. The outfits and decorations were simply breathtaking.

John Abshire, King ROU XXI, and Tori Taylor, Queen ROU XXI, set a new standard for Mardi Gras royalty. Mr. ROU 2004/05, Shawn Carter, and Miss ROU 2004/05, Kayla Kinkaid, also outdid themselves. All in all, it was a night of enchantment. For those of you who missed this incredible event, I can only say you missed an unforgettable night. I just cannot imagine how ROU will ever top their Bal Masque XXI.

Sound Factory and its Back Side have been going all out this year for Mardi Gras. On Jan. 22, Back Side hosted its annual ROU Ball Pre-Party. There was food and drinks, and a lot of fun. It was a great way to begin what turned out to be a fabulous night. After the ball, Sound Factory hosted an After-Party, and as always, it was a wild time.

And now that this yearís Mardi Gras balls are over, Sound Factory and its Back Side are going all out for Mardi Gras day. On Tues. Feb. 8, Mark and John, and the rest of the crew at Sound Factory and Back Side will be throwing a celebration that will give new meaning to Fat Tuesday. They will be open all day and have enough food and drinks to make even the least festive person want to strip down for some beads.

Until the big day, come by Sound Factory and Back Side and check out everything else they have to offer. Sound Factory is open seven days a week and offers a weekly lineup that you wonít soon forget. Every Monday night, Sound Factory has Happy Hour drink prices all night long.

Tuesdays at Sound Factory have become famous around Acadiana. If you're planning on having a great night, thereís no avoiding their Karaoke Night. Itís where all your friends will be.

Every Wednesday night you can come by Sound Factory and enjoy a drink while watching sexy male dancers.

On Thursdays you wonít want to miss Drink-N-Drown. This is the night where you can pay ten dollars and drink all night long for free. And the best part is if you are not drinking, you donít have to pay. Regardless, Sound Factory is the most economical place in town on Thursday night.

On Friday Nights you can enjoy Big Girl Cocktails all night long for three dollars.

And who could forget about the Saturday Night Special at Sound Factory. Each Saturday night, Sound Factory will run a drink special for that night only. It could be anything from dollar schnapps to dollar domestic beer. Itíll be there little surprise. And the best part is there wonít be a cover charge. Thatís right, you can get into Sound Factory for free and still take advantage of their surprise drink special. Now thatís a deal.

Every Sunday night is Show Night. This is the night where you can come out with all your friends and enjoy some good old fashioned gay entertainment. And on Monday, the fun starts all over again.

With so much going on at Sound Factory, itís easy to forget about its Back Side right next door. But that would be a mistake, because Back Side offers not only a totally different atmosphere, but a different weekly lineup.

Every Monday is a Pool Tournament starting at 8pm, and thereís Happy Hour all night long.

Tuesdays are "Get A Long One For Less." All your favorite domestic longnecks are only two dollars.

Wednesdays you can enjoy hot male dancers.

Every Thursday night, the Back Side will have a Dart Tournament starting at 8pm, not to mention the two dollar longnecks theyíll be serving all night long.

On Friday nights, the Back Side offers a Draft Beer Bust with three dollar pitchers all night long.

Saturday are Dollar Draft Night.

And who could forget about the Sunday Brunch Buffet at Back Side. And think, you can walk right next door for different drink specials at Sound Factory.

And to make things even better, the Back Side now offers food seven days a week from open til close. So if you find yourself hungry while your out, take advantage of Back Sideís new menu of foods. Itís fast, friendly, convenient, and very reasonably priced.

With everything the Sound Factory and its Back Side has to offer, it would be a real mistake to miss out on all the fun, not only during the Carnival season, but all year long.

Jules Downtown has had a lot going on this Carnival season. On Jan. 21, Jules hosted a Cingular party. The night was an incredible success and everybody had a great time. The very next night, Jan. 22, Jules hosted a ROU Ball After Party. It was great to see everybody out in all their formalwear. It was like being in a fairytale, no pun intended.

There is just one week until Mardi Gras day, and Jules Downtown will be open all day beginning with the parades. It will be an incredible day with fun for everyone, gay, bi or straight.

In the meantime, while youíre waiting around for the next big event, donít forget about Julesí weekly lineup. Jules is open every Tuesday thru Saturday, with great specials each night. And every night, donít forget about their Happy Hour Drink Specials from 8 til 10pm. This means you can always start off the night with two for one well drinks or domestic beer. It really does pay to show up early at Jules.

Every Tuesday Night at Jules is Half Price Drink Night. All night long you can enjoy all your favorite beverages for half the usual price.

If youíre looking for something really wild to do on a Wednesday, Jules is the place for you. To begin the night, you can take advantage of two dollar martinis and cosmopolitans until 11. At 10pm the night gets really wild when the Men of Manwatch begin taking it off for your viewing pleasure. You can watch some of the hottest guys around and thereís no cover charge. Now thatís a party.

Thursday nights are Karaoke Night. You can come out and sing to your heartís desire. Or if you donít like singing, you can have just as much fun watching. Regardless, youíll have a blast.

And who could forget about weekends at Jules Downtown? Every Friday night at Jules is Retro Night. You can come out and enjoy the biggest hits from the 70s, 80s, and 90s. Itís a real blast from the past.

Every Saturday, you can find the biggest party around at Jules Downtown. You can not only enjoy the Men of Manwatch, but Jules now has one dollar well drinks and domestic beer all night long. And on top of all this, you can dance the night away to some of the best music to be found in Acadiana. Itís no wonder that they call it a Dance Party. And when the week is finished, it all starts again on Tuesday. This Carnival Season, Jules Downtown is really ready to make sure you get into the Mardi Gras spirit.

I realize that a lot of people head to New Orleans for Mardi Gras, and thatís exactly what I did before I moved to Lafayette. But since I spent my first Fat Tuesday celebrating here, I have never once regretted my decision. This will be my fifth Mardi Gras in Acadiana, and every year I have more fun than the last. For those of you who have never spent Mardi Gras Day here and are planning on heading to the Crescent City, take my advice and come back one day early to take advantage of everything Acadiana has to offer. I promise, you will have just as much fun stumbling around Jefferson Street as you would on Bourbon Street, and you donít have to worry about driving two hours to get home.

Regardless, have a safe and happy Mardi Gras holiday. I hope to see you around town.
