Discoveries in Culinary Delights...

After a short wait in line, we were seated at Deanie's Seafood restaurant in the Quarter at 821 Iberville St. at Dauphine, New Orleans. The server was at our table immediately to take our drink order and serve us the restaurants trademark complimentary spicy potatoes [boiled in crabboil].

Although there are many excellent choices for appetizers, the fried artichoke hearts ($5.95) and oysters on the half shell ($7.95 a doz.) are our favorites. The crisp artichoke hearts are coated in a light deliciously seasoned batter and then served with shaved parmesan. The oysters were shucked fresh, served ice cold, with both horseradish and ketchup. Tonight the oysters were exceedingly tasty.

It is always difficult to choose an entree here. However, tonight it would be the crabmeat au gratin ($16.95) and half seafood platter ($17.95). The fresh jumbo lump crabmeat is divine baked in a creamy blend of four cheeses with Louisiana seasonings, one of the best au gratin's we've ever had. This entree was also served with fresh salad and French bread.

It was our first time to order the half seafood platter. We had previously shared the giant seafood platter ($34.95) which proved to be way too much. The half serving was huge as well. It came with fried shrimp, oysters, catfish, a softshell crab and crawfish dressing balls.

In many restaurants, platters of this sort, the various seafood are all fried the same length of time. Here, the chef's have mastered the art, serving the shrimp and catfish crisp, while the oysters are dropped and pulled right up keeping them tender and juicy. Although all of the seafood was seasoned, the softshell crab almost stole the show. It was slightly spicy and every morsel was a culinary explosion.
