Subject: Gay Marriage
Letters To The Editor
‘Joe Millionaire’ is OK, but gay unions aren’t?
Wednesday February 26, 2003 I went to a memorial service Friday afternoon to grieve for the loss of a long-time friend and to celebrate his life and accomplishments. The mourners were led by his beloved partner of 31 years and his brothers and sisters. The celebrant and participants spoke of his family leadership, his brilliance, his generosity of time and spirit to guide the young people he taught and of his devotion to his life partner. Regrettably, his partner must now endure his grief and loss with yet another burden, since he will not receive any of the economic benefits he would have received had he been a legal spouse. On Saturday morning over coffee, I read an article on "starter" marriages — apparently a new name for "first" marriages — and how being on one’s second marriage no longer carries a stigma, although marriage number three before age 34 apparently does cause some raised eyebrows, at least in some circles. There was an article about J. Lo on the next page. Later, I read about a new "reality" TV series to be called "Married by America," in which couples are paired up by popular vote and then married. Then there is "Joe Millionaire" and his bevy of gold diggers and "The Bachelorette" and her handsome stable. Of course, there was the original "Who Wants to Marry a Millionaire," not to mention "Temptation Island." Would someone care to explain to me yet again just how allowing gay men and lesbians to marry would destroy the institution of marriage and shake the bedrock foundation of this country?

Subject: THE HIGHLANDS INN CELEBRATES 20TH BIRTHDAY
The Highlands Inn celebrates its 20th birthday in 2003. Established in 1983, the Highlands quickly became one of the country’s finest lesbian resorts. The Highlands was also one of the first to define itself as a resort exclusively for lesbians - as its motto says, "a lesbian paradise."
Members of the gay and lesbian media and travel agents are invited to visit the Inn and experience its hospitality for themselves. The owner, Grace Newman, also welcomes telephone interviews.
The Inn will celebrate its 20th with several special events. A birthday bash for guests will be held over the weekend of May 2-4. The weekend will include a catered dinner followed by a fabulous party with a DJ and dancing.
Other celebratory events include the 2003 Women’s Concert Series. The first women’s concert was held in 1999. This year the series will include more concerts than ever before! Several of the artists are making return appearances - all are of course excited to be part of the Inn’s 20th! Five concerts will be in the spring and two in the fall. Other special events will be held for friends and family, and for the local community.
The Highlands’ success and longevity are remarkable for any small business, but especially for a business devoted to serving the lesbian community. The Inn’s 20th birthday stands as a significant milestone in gay and lesbian travel. Twenty years ago, there were virtually no accommodations where gay men and lesbians could feel really comfortable. Now lesbians and gay men have hundreds of desirable vacation travel options.
Located on 100 private wooded acres in New Hampshire’s beautiful White Mountains, The Highlands Inn is a complex of three buildings - the Main Inn with 13 guest rooms, the Farmhouse (5 guest rooms), and a rustic Cottage. The Inn provides an atmosphere of peaceful and refreshing privacy, both outdoors and throughout its common areas - the spacious fireplaced living room, library, wicker-filled porch, and huge sunny breakfast room. The guest rooms and common areas are distinctively furnished with antiques, fine linens, original artwork, and fresh flowers, creating the ambiance of a Victorian country home. Other amenities include the 54-foot heated pool, two large jacuzzis (indoors and outdoors), 15 miles of trails right on the property, and an extensive lesbian/gay video collection.
Open year round, the Inn’s many attractions vary from season to season. Guests have come from all 50 states, Canada, most if not all European countries, South America, Australia, New Zealand, and even Thailand! Over its 20 years, the Inn has hosted as many as 25,000 couples - many have been coming to the Inn for years, often visiting several times a year!
The Inn’s consistent superiority has long been recognized by the industry. Out & About travel magazine has awarded its Editor’s Choice Award to The Highlands Inn every year since the award’s inception. As Out & About has noted, recipients of the award "...are the places, companies and experiences we personally choose to patronize, and most frequently recommend to our friends and family."
