Austin Leather Community Marks March with Events

With the statewide celebration of  the leather lifestyle - Texas Leather Pride - looming on the local horizon, two big events are planned for the local leather community this month.

Mr. Austin Leather 2004 David Richardson starts things off with Fit To Be Tied Bondage Ho Down on Sat., March 6, the Chain Drive, 504 Willow. The activities get underway at 9pm with a special show, bondage demonstrations, and a silent auction. Pop Diva Crystal Waters and DJ Roland Belmares Coming to Xtreme on March 12th Weekend

Crystal Waters

It’s going to be 100% Pure Fun when Xtreme nightclub - located at 110 Riverside at Riverside and Congress - plays host to one of the season’s hottest weekends of entertainment.

Crystal Waters brings her talents and her hit songs to the Xtreme stage on Fri., March 12. One of clubland’s favorite singers, Waters first scored with one of 1991’s surprise left-field hits with Gypsy Woman (She’s Homeless). The song had both a potent message and wonderful vocal that smartly mixed anger, irony, and humor.

Best known for her dance hit 100% Pure Love, Waters is riding high on once again with My Time, her tenth chart topping club hit. She’ll bring the energy and excitement of her live show to Austin for this special one-night-only performance.

On Sat., March 13, Los Angeles bad boy DJ Roland Belmares returns to Austin for an Xtreme Undies Party. Strip down to your skivvies with the extremely hot Xtreme bartenders as they party with one of the country’s top DJs.

Belmares recently headlined the super-successful Freedom Party 3, hosted by the Austin Gay and Lesbian Film Festival. An Austin native, Belmares has taken the circuit by storm, headlining at Meltdown & Perfect Day in Austin, the White Party in Palm Springs, the Fireball in Chicago, Cherry 6 in Washington D.C., among many others.

Advance tickets are available at the nightclub. For more information, call the club at 512.804.2707 or visit on-line at www.sidekicksaustin.com.

The OZ Parties’ Pot Luck Dinner at 34th Street Cafe

The OZ Parties will celebrate their Fourth Annual Pot Luck Dinner on Sun., March 7, at the 34th Street Café, located at 1005 West 34th Street. The event will run from 4pm to 8pm at the recently redecorated Austin eatery.

The restaurant will be closed to the general public, allowing HIV+ straight, gay, bisexual and transgendered individuals to meet for fellowship and experience the opportunity to make new friends. Organizers say the event will be a true pot luck dinner and all attendees are encouraged to bring a dish.

The OZ Parties is a volunteer effort from people with HIV and receives no direct financial support from any individual or community-based organization. It is part of the Volunteer Program of AIDS Services of Austin. A $5 contribution from guests is welcome (but not required) to help cover expenses.

ALGPC To Oppose Marriage Amendment at March 9 Precinct Caucuses

At the March 9 party primary precinct caucuses, the Austin Lesbian/Gay Political Caucus (ALGPC) will ask Austin voters to stand against the much-discussed proposed amendment to the U.S. Constitution that would define marriage to exclude gay and lesbian citizens. The proposed amendment recently received the backing of President George W. Bush.

Precinct caucuses are held the evening of primary voting, usually at the polling place, and are an opportunity for neighbors to discuss important political issues and become delegates to their party’s county and state conventions. ALGPC is urging all members of Austin’s gay and lesbian community to attend their party precinct caucuses beginning at 7:15pm on March 9 to support a resolution that would put their caucus on record as being against the proposed amendment.

The language of the resolution has been crafted to state "whereas the Constitution of the United States is the framework of our democracy, guarding our liberty and ensuring that all Americans have equal rights and equal protections under the law; and whereas the US Constitution should not be used to limit the rights of any group of Americans, or create separate classes of citizens, therefore be it resolved that this precinct caucus petitions the Legislature of the State of Texas and the Congress of the United States to vote against the proposed US Constitutional Amendment that defines marriage and limits the rights of gay and lesbian families."

For information on how precinct caucuses operate and a copy of the resolution on marriage, visit the ALGPC website at www.outaustin.org. You can also call 512.474.0750 for more information.
