11th Annual PFLAG Champagne Reception

The 11th Annual Caldwell/Kearby Scholarship Champagne Reception benefiting PFLAG's Scholarship and Education Fund and honoring the 2000-2001 Scholarship Recipients will be held Sat., May 12 from 7pm at Anne Rice's palatial abode called St. Elizabeth's located at 1314 Napoleon Ave.

Besides food catered by Willow Catering and wine and champagne provided by Wood Enterprises, there will also be entertainment furnished by the New Orleans Gay Men's Chorus.

Levels of Participation in this fund-raiser are Individual, $25 (in advance) $30 at the door; Host, $50 (receive two tickets to the event and recognition in the program); or Partner In Education, $100 (receive four tickets to the event and recognition in the program.) Applicants Sought for "SATCHMO" Show

The Mayor's Office of Tourism and Arts, in commemoration of the centennial of Louis Armstrong's birth, is sponsoring the first-ever art tribute to "Satchmo" - the man, his life and his music.

French Quarter North and South Art Guild will coordinate the "SATCHMO" show. This is a juried show that will include oil, watercolor, acrylic and mixed media (no photography). All entries must depict Louis Armstrong, his life, music, his memory, or Satchmo-inspired themes.

Judges are distinguished members of the New Orleans art and business community. Entry should include a slide or color photograph, plus a description of each piece entered. Actual pieces to be reviewed and accepted by appointment only. A $10 entry fee for each piece will be due upon acceptance. Make check payable to FQN&S Art Guild. Fees must be paid for each title at the time of acceptance. When accepted, each piece must be accompanied by two (2) 3" X 5" cards with the title of the work, size, the medium used, the price, and the artist's name, address and telephone number. Artist will be notified via phone as to delivery and acceptance. Art must be framed and ready to hang, wire, hook, etc. No Glass. Art must measure at least 16" X 20" or larger and can be in any of the above media.

The committee will be accepting entries through July 20.

The opening reception will be at the Crescent City Brewhouse, 527 Decatur St., on Thurs., Aug. 2 and will hang for the month of August. Cash awards will be given at the reception.

Concert by YA'LL
at 1st Unitarian Universalist Church of N.O.

On Sun., May 20, 7:30pm there will be a concert by YA'LL at the First Unitarian Universalist Church of New Orleans, 2903 Jefferson Ave. at Claiborne.

YA'LL is comprised of two guys from Nashville, one in a green dress, who spent six years in the New York City music scene. They have appeared on The Jon Stewart Show, MTV's Indie Outing and Comedy Central's Premium Blend. For more information, call 504.866.9010.


Pride With a Purpose:
A BreastCancer Fund-Raiser

Charlene's on the Coast, 1205 Blue Meadow Rd., Bay St. Louis, MS, is holding a breast cancer fund-raiser called "Pride With A Purpose" on June 23 and 24 beginning at 2pm on both days.

For a donation of $10 there will be food, games, volleyball, swimming, booths and geat entertainment.

Charlene writes: "This year's donations are tax deductible but only if made out to Hancock Medical Foundation-MAP. We are soliciting raffle items, silent auction items and cash donations. Our good friend Jan has already gotten us an anonymous donation of $500. Thanks Jan. If you are interested in booth space at $10 a day please let me know. We hope all of you will join us and help to stop this terrible tragedy hitting our community. And remember absolutely no ice chest or pets.
