Splash Day Weekend

Everything you wanted to know about Splash Day Weekend is here below as Gays and Lesbians frolic in Austin and on the sunny shores & rocks of Hippie Hollow at Lake Travis on Sun, May 2 from 12 noon till 4pm. Splash Weekend runs from Fri., Apr. 30 through Sun., May 2 - Splash Day. Splash Day is Austin's first yearly Gay/Lesbian event sponsored by the bars and clubs, businesses and organizations of the Austin Tavern Guild (ATG). Free wristbands may be obtained Sat. night for free beer from kegs at the Lake on Splash Day. Host establishments sponsoring Splash Day Weekend ATG members who will check ID's and give out the free wrist bracelets. Hosts for Splash Day are: Ambush, 'Bout Time, Charlie's Austin, The Forum, Midtowne Spa, Oilcan Harry's, Rainbow Cattle Company, Splash Video Bar, Texas Triangle and the United Court of Austin. Coors of Austin is the corporate sponsor for Splash Day Weekend. Don't have a Lake ride? Austin Lesbian & Gay Political Caucus (ALGPC) will be hosting their own barge on Lake Travis with Large Marge Party Barge. The boat has food, alcoholic & soft drinks, music and frivolity. The boat leaves at 9am Splash Day and reservations are $20 by calling 512.474.5475.

Festivities for Splash Weekend are also happening outside the Lake. Diva Thelma Houston performs live with two shows on Fri., Apr. 30 at the Edge starting at 9:30pm. Tickets are $10 in advance and $12 door. On Sat., It's a party with dancers, shower dancers & more dancers at 9pm. Splash Sun. offers Splash TEA Day with Tea Dance, Tea Specials & T-Back dancers with music by DJ Little Debbie 7-10pm. Karaoke starts at 10pm-2am with Madam Murrah. The Forum hosts the First Splash Party on Sat., May 1 with their Dance One Party sponsored by Genre magazine. Circuit DJ Roland (RO) Belmares will be spinning the hits. Patrons are asked to come early for free T-shirts, music CDs, subscriptions to Genre magazine and a balloon drop with many prizes to be grabbed. On Sun., after the lake, their rooftop patio comes alive with a great B-B-Que Cookout and Tea Dance. Ben Parsley and Splash Productions will host Twilight after-hours at Twist located at 505 Neches St. DJ Jamie J., resident DJ of Club Universe in San Francisco and Splash/SF/Folsom as well as the artist of the Sunrise CD Series and Injoy CD Series, starts the 'Twilight' after-hours party Sun. morning at 4am before Splash. Tickets are $10 at the door.

Over at Rainbow Cattle Company on Sun., May 2 at 8pm, they host their Splash Beach Party featuring the Austin Babtist Women. Happy b-days go out to Mike Strope and Larry Medders on RCC who both turn 55 on Splash Day. Dick's Deja Disco, your friendly neighborhood downtown man's bar, invites all after the Lake to their free cookout on the patio from 5pm with jazz tunes starting at 8pm. On Mon., it's Camp Lounge Night with DJ Warren at 9pm. Splash Video Bar starts off Fri. with their great happy hour and into the night with DJ / VJ Joel Gust. On Sat., they host Wet and Wild Splash Saturday Night with guest DJ/VJ Jimmy Bartlett from Moby Dick's in Dallas. Also on Sat. is a very wild dancer performing and a best chest contest at midnight with $100 prize. On Sun., look for B-B-Que after the lake on the newly revamped patio complete with a fish pond oasis at 6pm. 1920's will be open all weekend for great martinis, appetizers & social fun. Chain Drive hosts their Cinco De Mayo celebration from Fri. Apr. 30 - Wed., May 5, Cinco De Mayo Day. On Splash Day Sun., they feature after the lake, a special fajitas cookout from 4-8pm and then a Belly-Grande Contest with special prizes to win. On Cinco De Mayo, look for their chefs serving up a special Steak Ranchero with great drink specials.

Oilcan Harry's offer patrons Fri. with their happy hour, a free buffet and Momma's Boyz Dancers. On Sat., it's their Austin's Best Dance party with DJs Miss H, Dig'M and Licious. After the lake on Sun., they host their Sunday Tea with Momma's Boyz Dancers and a cookout on the patio starting at 5pm. On Mon., it's their Recovery Party with a free happy hour buffet. Charlie's Austin features MANWATCH dancers throughout the weekend, and a free B-B-Que after the lake starting at 4pm. Later that night, Lauren Taylor takes her Final Walk as Miss US of A at 11:30pm with featured guests, Sabrina Ross, Jame' Perry and Kara Dion. Up at 'Bout Time, they start off their Splash Day Weekend with happy hour and a free buffet. Happy b-day goes out to manager Corey Duckett on Sat., May 1 who's off to Cancun celebrating his 42nd and holding b-day. Last, but not least, Midtowne Spa hosts refreshments, both beverage and male, all weekend long.

SPAMARAMA May 1st

SPAMARAMA '99 celebrates this Sat., May 1 - May Day on Auditorium Shores from 12 noon until 9pm. Festivities will feature the classic SPAM Cook-Off, the Austin-only SPAMAlympics with the Foster's Boomerang 2000 Team, non-stop music featuring a variety of local bands and entertainers in the ultimate SPAMJam, a kid's area, arts & crafts vendor booths, another classic T- shirt, and the commemorative Cook Book! MUT Finals Slated

The 7th annual Miss Universal Thang '99 Comedy Finals Pageant (MUT) will be held on May 8 up at `Bout Time. Pageant will start at 10:30pm. MUT is Freedumb Productions in association with the Royal WE and `Bout Time's annual comedy drag only event with nothing serious about the event except that it raises valuable needed funding for this year's charity, Project Transitions of Austin. Preliminary contestants competed recently for the finals with Ambush's own, Eric A. Crabtree, entering as Miss Mefleea Anna Runna - Miss Kosovo '99. Happy b-day goes out to head bartender Chaz Elliott as he celebrated his 32nd during the MUT Preliminaries last week. The OZ Parties Cook/Campout

The OZ Parties for HIV+ singles is having an outdoor cookout on Sat., May 15, 3-9pm in the wooded grove behind 2507 Mitchell Lane (near Manchaca and Slaughter). This particular event is welcoming both single and attached guests, and optional overnight camping is available for those interested (please bring own sleeping gear). $5 contribution or potluck dish encouraged, not required, BYOB please. Meltdown '99
Lust In Space Slated

Splash Day is upon us and soon after it will be Memorial Day Weekend May 28 - 31 when Ben Parsley and Splash Productions host Meltdown '99 - Lust In Space. Meltdown is billed as the start of Gay/Lesbian summer in Austin providing 5 major circuit events throughout the city. On Fri., May 28 - it's "First Call" Oil Can Harry's - The official welcome to Austin Party with DJs Dig'M, Miss H and Licious. Cover is $5/door starting at 8pm. On Sat., May 29 - it's time to head again back to Lake Travis and Hippie Hollow with the "Margarita's Lake Lounge" featuring DJ Rick Herrington (Dallas) At the Lake, party barges will be loaded with food, drink and hot guys! Tickets are $60 per person and the event lasts from 11am - 5:30pm. After the lake it's time to rest up and then hit Meltdown '99 - Lust in Space. The nation's fastest rising circuit star DJ Roland (Ro) Belmares (Forum's resident DJ) will be providing the travel from 9pm- 4am at La Zona Rosa, 612 W 4th St. Advance tickets are $25, $30 door.

After La Zona Rosa, don't dare go to sleep. It's time to embark on your "Journey to Planet K" with DJ Michael Tank (Houston) in after-hours at Twist (505 Neches) $10 cover at the door. Tank will be pumping the cosmic sounds from 4am - 10am. Afterwards? The party still continues. Sun. night, May 30, DJ Don Bishop (Palm Springs) presents Summer Tea upstairs at The Forum from 5pm - 10pm. Downstairs starting at 10pm, DJ Lydia Prim (New Orleans) takes control and creates Aurora at 10pm - dawn. Adance tickets are $15/door $20. VIP weekend passes to Meltdown '99, which includes all events above, are only $99. Buses from the host hotels to Margarita's Lake Lounge Dock and back are $20 extra. Host hotels include the Radisson on Town Lake and the new HomeStead Village on First St. and Barton Springs Rd. Free VIP shuttle bus will be running Sat. night from both host hotels to the main event and also the Twilight after-hours party and back to the hotels from 11pm - am. (Shuttle will be $3 per trip for non-VIP pass holders). Tickets are on sale now at Lobo Bookstore, N8 and Outlines. Student discounts are available with proper ID. HIV Services of Austin will be offering FREE HIV testing during `first Splash' weekend at Hippie Hollow on Lake Travis, May 1 & 2 (Saturday and Sunday) from 9am. until 5pm. Testing will be conducted by the bathrooms and only takes a few minutes. You return for your results two weeks later. Don't miss this great opportunity!
