Laurie Bonura and Nino Bonura in The Hallelujah Girls

The Hallelujah Girls at 30 by Ninety Theatre through August 2 It may not be Shakespeare, but after four months without any live theater, The Hallelujah Girls, playing at Mandeville’s 30 by Ninety Theatre (https://30byninety.com) through August 2, seems like the greatest show ever done. Well, not quite. But almost. Since the COVID-19 pandemic shut down live theater in … [Read more...] about Trodding the Boards July 28, 2020

Anthony Bean with students of last year’s ABCT/NORDC Performing Arts Youth Summer Camp

Curtain Up, Computer On The Company: A St. Bernard Community Theatre presents Flowing Robes, a play that examines the lives of women as the British attempt to invade New Orleans and how they are changed as a result of that. Performances will be at The Azienda Theatre (2000 Paris Rd., Chalmette) July 29 thru August 1. Producer Mark Cortale and Host/Musical Director Seth … [Read more...] about Trodding the Boards July 14, 2020

Juan Diego Flórez and Joyce DiDonato in La Donna del Lago

Jessie Mueller/The Seth Concert Series through July 13 It’s not the same, but what is these days? And in some ways, it’s even better than what it’s replacing. “It” is The Seth Concert Series, a spinoff from the Broadway@NOCCA series that has become a beloved part of NOLA’s theater scene. With live performances temporarily on hold, producer Mark Cortale and host/music … [Read more...] about Trodding the Boards June 30, 2020

“Uncle” Wayne Daigrepont at Andrea’s Restaurant on June 19 When Jefferson Parish moved into Phase 2, live entertainment began to make a comeback. And what a pleasure it was recently to head out to Andrea’s Restaurant (3100 19th St., Metairie) to enjoy the music and esprit of the ridiculously talented Wayne Daigrepont. With impish humor, “Uncle” Wayne, as he’s known around … [Read more...] about Trodding the Boards June 16, 2020

Jeremy Jordan will be appearing in The Seth Concert Series

NOLA’s Theater Scene I really, really, really, really wish I could tell you that curtains will momentarily be going up around town. But that would be fake news and there’s enough of that out there already (Hydroxychloroquine or bleach anybody?) Instead, if you’d like to see local entertainers, there are a number of opportunities online. Here are some of … [Read more...] about Trodding the Boards June 2, 2020

Les Misérables, or The Sun’ll Come Out Tomorrow? How much have things changed in the past two months since everything shut down? Well, depending on who you are or what you’re asking about, a lot or a little. For, as some places begin to reopen, alas for live theater, it’s turning into a hard knock life. (Hmmm...two Annie references already, more than I’ve probably made … [Read more...] about Trodding the Boards May 19, 2020

PAST PRESENT FUTURE II for Trodding the Boards

May 9, 2020 By Brian Sands

The Radical Buffoons' Jon Greene in Balloonacy

With no shows to critique or even help publicize, I wanted to offer this column to Artistic Directors of New Orleans’ theater companies to let us know what was going on when things shut down, what they’re doing now, and what plans they have for the future. For the second installment of PAST  PRESENT  FUTURE, Jon Greene of The Radical Buffoons shares his thoughts … [Read more...] about PAST PRESENT FUTURE II for Trodding the Boards

PAST PRESENT FUTURE for Trodding the Boards

April 23, 2020 By Brian Sands

While we’re suffering from theatrum interruptus, I wanted to offer this column to the Artistic Directors of New Orleans’ theater companies to let us know what was going on when things shut down, what they’re doing now, and what plans they have for the future. First up for PPF (Past Present Future) is The NOLA Project’s A.J. Allegra who has been nominated for eight Ambie … [Read more...] about PAST PRESENT FUTURE for Trodding the Boards

Metropolitan Opera HD Encore/Agrippina at AMC Elmwood Palace 20 through May 13 (hopefully) plus “Nightly Met Opera Streams”

March 18, 2020 By Brian Sands

Metropolitan Opera HD Encore/Agrippina at AMC Elmwood Palace 20 through May 13 (hopefully) plus “Nightly Met Opera Streams” One might think of the Met's HD Broadcasts as substitutes, most worthy substitutes but still substitutes, for the thrill of attending live performances. And you might be right. Yet such broadcasts can provide front row seats to superb productions. … [Read more...] about Metropolitan Opera HD Encore/Agrippina at AMC Elmwood Palace 20 through May 13 (hopefully) plus “Nightly Met Opera Streams”

Folk Rhythms/Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra at the Orpheum Much as I enjoy Beethoven and Mozart and Chopin and Bach, when I go to hear live classical music, I prefer something I’m not likely to encounter elsewhere. The Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra (LPO) delivered that abundantly with its recent Folk Rhythms featuring composer and oud player Simon Shaheen, and a program … [Read more...] about Trodding the Boards February 11, 2020
