Allies Against Cancer

August 4, 2024 By Community Contributor

The LGBTQ+ community and allies gather to equalize cancer outcomes for all. Every cancer. Every life.

The 3rd annual Allies Against Cancer event raises awareness and funds to combat the disproportionate rates of cancer in the LGBTQ+ community.  Kicking off decadence weekend, Allies Against Cancer will host Drag Race legend Jujubee, Debbie with a D, Laveau Contraire, and many other local performers.

When: August 29th, 6:30pm-10pm

Where: Generations Hall 310 Andrew Higgins Blvd, New Orleans, LA 70130

The event includes: open bar, sampling from local culinary partners, silent auction, legendary show, recognition of our Allies Ambassadors, lung cancer screenings, and much more. Proceeds from Allies Against Cancer go towards increased cancer screenings, lodging and transportation assistance for cancer patients, and life-saving cancer research.

Cancer can affect anyone, but it does not affect everyone equally. The LGBTQ+ community have a disproportionate risk of cancer. LGBTQ+ people face unique risk factors, screening disparities, and experience obstacles to prevent, detect, treat, and survive their cancer diagnoses. These obstacles include homophobia, transphobia, poverty, structural racism, limited access to care systems, insurance coverage, and negative experiences with health care providers. Collectively, this results in significant barriers to life saving cancer care. Allies Against Cancer continues to raise awareness and advocate for New Orleans’ LGBTQ+ community to ensure we can end cancer as we know it, for everyone.

Speakers: Debbie with a D testimony: “As a public health drag queen with a Master’s in Public Health and a long-time advocate for HIV and STI testing, prevention, and treatment, I was thrilled to receive a call from the American Cancer Society three years ago, asking for my help in planning the inaugural Allies Against Cancer event. It was a perfect fit for me! Cancer doesn’t discriminate, but society sometimes does, creating barriers to care and treatment for the LGBTQ+ community. Personally, screenings helped me detect and treat an early-stage cancer, and this was after I hosted our first event in 2022. This event aims to raise awareness about the importance of cancer screening and treatment for the LGBTQ+ community, addressing disparities caused by stigma and discrimination. It was clearly effective for me! This year I have Rupaul’s Drag Race legend Jujubee as my guest host along with Laveau Contraire, as well as several local drag legends to put on a hot show to kick off the Southern Decadence weekend! Proceeds from the event and auction go towards cancer screenings, lodging and transportation assistance for cancer patients, and life-saving cancer research. Also speaking will be Jessica Coarsey: Former Hope Lodge guest and Allies Against Cancer survivor speaker.
