The hospitality community in New Orleans is enriched by remarkable individuals, with bartenders serving as essential ambassadors for both their establishments and the city itself. This month, I would like to highlight Marcus Holland from The Page, who embodies the spirit of New Orleans. A lifelong resident of the Seventh Ward, Marcus has dedicated six years to The Page, where his work is deeply personal, as he is guided by his uncle, the esteemed Willie Mackie.
Known for his affable nature and Southern charm, Marcus fosters a safe and inviting environment that appeals to both locals and tourists. His professionalism, combined with his approachable demeanor, has made him a beloved figure in the community.
Additionally, he has crafted a signature cocktail called The White Tee, which features tequila, peach schnapps, Sprite, and triple sec, reflecting his personal preference for Reposado tequila when he enjoys a night out.
He does, however, have a pet peeve regarding customers who linger at the bar station, as he encourages patrons to move down after receiving their drinks to ensure a smooth service for everyone.
Marcus’s outgoing and amiable personality is what he considers his greatest asset as a bartender. The opportunity to engage with a diverse array of individuals is what fuels his passion for this profession. Additionally, he takes pride in being part of his Uncle Willie’s establishment, the only Black-owned gay bar in the French Quarter. As a straight father of two daughters, Marcus stands as a dedicated ally to the LGBTQ+ community.
He says the craziest thing he sees a lot as a bartender is the fascinating transformation of patrons from sober to drunk.
