The neighborhood bar holds a significant place in the cultural fabric of New Orleans, especially when it embraces an LGBTQ+ friendly atmosphere, as exemplified by The Friendly, where my bartender spotlight, the remarkable Butch Sager, works.

A native of Michigan, Butch is a returning New Orleanian, having experienced life in the city both before and after Hurricane Katrina. With three years of service at The Friendly, his extensive bartending background includes stints in the French Quarter and various vibrant locations such as the Virgin Islands, New York, and Kentucky.
Butch stands out as a beacon of joy in the bar, his radiant smile and infectious laughter instantly uplifting the spirits. In these uncertain times, the presence of a neighborhood bartender like Butch can provide comfort during difficult moments and enhance celebrations during joyful occasions. His warm demeanor envelops guests like a welcoming bear hug, making them feel at home.
While he maintains a professional approach behind the bar, efficiently serving customers and crafting delightful cocktails, he particularly enjoys a unique shot combining 2/3 Screwball Peanut Butter Whiskey and 1/3 Chocolate Bailey’s, reminiscent of a Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup with a wicked kick.
When asked about his greatest strength behind the bar, Butch emphasized the importance of teamwork. He highlighted the synergy he shares with his co-workers and his husband, who often bartends alongside him, stating that their collaboration is essential to creating a vibrant neighborhood establishment. The foundation of any successful business lies in the ability to work cohesively towards a common goal, and finding a reliable team player is akin to discovering a rare gem for any employer. For Butch, bartending offers a social outlet and a way to earn income, especially since he primarily works from home in another role.
Curious about bartenders’ personal preferences, I learned that Butch enjoys a Hendricks and Tonic with extra lime when he goes out. His favorite cocktail to craft is a Bloody Mary, prepared with a full array of ingredients.
Interestingly, his most memorable bartending experience occurred not in New Orleans but on Long Island, where he witnessed the exotic cats of Siegfried and Roy roaming the deck of their yacht while he worked. Everyone loves a celebrity bartender! Additionally, Butch has had the unique celebrity opportunity to socialize with Olympic figure skater Dorothy Hamill and other U.S. ice skaters, even having Rudy Galindo hit on him. Talk about “heated rivalry.”
His greatest annoyance is quite straightforward: he dislikes when people shout to get his attention while he is occupied assisting another customer. He acknowledges their presence but prefers a more respectful approach.
The Friendly Bar, situated at 2301 Charters Street in the Marigny, is a place where you can frequently find Butch, particularly during their Thursday/ThursGay Nights and the Thursday Dance Party Nights. Additionally, he plays a key role in coordinating the bar’s pop-up vendors.
