In my view, bartenders have always been akin to performers, with the bar serving as their stage.
Each night, they entertain an audience of both newcomers and loyal patrons. Similar to a theatrical production, they may receive enthusiastic applause that leads to repeat visits or face criticism.
The next bartender I wish to highlight is a skilled and professional performer, both in the spotlight and behind the bar. I am referring to none other than Henry Marshall III, also known by his glamorous persona, Monica Synclaire-Kennedy, at the Golden Lantern.

Born and raised in New Orleans, Monica has established a significant reputation in the city as a community advocate and one of the most captivating entertainers in the NOLA drag scene. She has been a part of the Golden Lantern for 14 years, having previously worked at The Jewel Box in the Upper 9th Ward before Hurricane Katrina.
Monica’s greatest strength behind the bar is her speed and her ability to provide attentive service with a smile. Given the bustling nature of French Quarter bars, maintaining a brisk pace while exuding positivity can be quite demanding. This, however, is where Monica truly shines. She exemplifies professionalism in both her performances and bartending.
“I enjoy bartending because it allows me to connect with people from diverse backgrounds. Working at the Golden Lantern feels like being part of a family. Even when interacting with a complete stranger, you still experience that familial atmosphere,” Monica expresses. Another remarkable quality Monica possesses is her exceptional listening skills, which is why both locals and visitors appreciate her service.
Her preferred cocktail is a Bombay Sapphire & Tonic, and she takes pleasure in crafting a Sex on the Beach cocktail. In an effort to inform readers’ interpersonal skills when engaging with bartenders, I often inquire about their biggest pet peeve. For Monica, “It is when customers ask, ‘What can you make?’ The more appropriate question would be, ‘What can you drink?’”
My other favorite question to ask is “What is the craziest thing you have seen as a bartender?” For Monica, it was an easy answer: “A customer came in, ordered a drink, and then commenced to urinate right at the bar.”
On stage, Monica is a powerhouse with a wide array of titles to her name that include Miss Amon Ra America, Miss Golden Lantern, Miss Gay New Orleans America, Mr & Miss Gay Pride New Orleans, Mr. Grand Monsieur, Southern Decadence Grand Marshal 47, Easter Grand Marshal 17 and King Cake Queen 23.
You can catch Monica at the bar on Mondays from 2pm to 2am during which time they cook food for the bar. He also works Saturdays from 8pm to 2am.
