New Orleans Ballet Association presents dance phenomenon Les Ballets Trockadero de Monte Carlo for one night only

December 30, 2022 By Community Contributor

New Orleans Ballet Association (NOBA)

New Orleans, LA (December 6, 2022) — New Orleans Ballet Association (NOBA) presents Les Ballets Trockadero de Monte Carlo on Saturday, January 28, 2023, at 7:30 p.m. at the Mahalia Jackson Theater for the Performing Arts. Tickets on sale now at www.nobadance.com.

For “the funniest night you will ever have at the ballet” (The Sunday Times, UK), catch the long-awaited return (last presented by NOBA in 2010) of The Trocks, as they are affectionately known, in a hilarious new program. Since 1974, this lovable all-male ballet company has been a major dance phenomenon throughout the world, performing parodies of ballet classics from Swan Lake to Les Sylphides en pointe and in tutus to contemporary masterpieces – all with awe-inspiring virtuosity. Expertly blending humor with extraordinary athletic artistry, The Trocks are “one of the great comic creations of the American stage” (San Francisco Chronicle) and guaranteed to bring audiences to their feet with “pure joy” (The Seattle Times).

New Orleans Ballet Association (NOBA)

Les Ballets Trockadero de Monte Carlo was founded in 1974 by a group of ballet enthusiasts for the purpose of presenting a playful, entertaining view of traditional, classical ballet in parody form and en travesti. The Trocks first performed in the late-late shows Off-Off Broadway for small audiences who appreciated the iconoclastic humor of it all, and by mid-1975, their loving knowledge of dance, their comic approach and their commitment to the notion that men can, indeed, dance en pointe without falling flat on their faces, was already garnering attention beyond the Company’s New York home.

Since those beginnings, Les Ballets Trockadero de Monte Carlo has been established as a major dance phenomenon throughout the world, with their numerous tours being both popular and critical successes. Revered by ballet aficionados as well as the uninitiated—those who don’t know a plié from a jeté—The Trocks have been called by the Sydney Star Observer “a guaranteed hoot for people who know nothing of ballet, and an absolute must for those who think they know the originals.”

The original concept of Les Ballets Trockadero de Monte Carlo has not changed since its inception: it is a company of professional male dancers performing the full range of the classical ballet and modern dance repertoire, while incorporating and exaggerating the foibles, accidents and underlying incongruities of serious dance. For the future, there are plans for new works; for performances in new cities, states and countries; and for the continuation of The Trocks’ original purpose—to bring the pleasure of dance to the widest possible audience. They will, as they have done for almost fifty years, “Keep on Trockin’.”

Following this performance, the season continues with the acrobatic and visually stunning MOMIX dance company with their interpretation of the beloved Alice in Wonderland story and concludes with the magnificent national company from the country of Georgia, the State Ballet of Georgia, accompanied by the Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra.
