Steven Powell (1956-2021)

May 31, 2021 By Community Contributor

Steven Powell passed away suddenly on May 21, 2021 at his home in New Orleans. He was 64.

He was born on September 1, 1956 in Campbellsville, KY, to Barbara Edelen Powell and the late
Bobbie Lewis Powell.

Steven Powell

A graduate of Western Kentucky University, Powell retired after a thirty year career as
Legislative Analyst at Equifax; at that time, the United States Senate recognized his work with
the presentation of a token of appreciation. He lived for many years in Atlanta before moving to
New Orleans.

On September 18, 2015, after having met in 2009, Powell married Joseph Bodenmiller. Powell
took tremendous pleasure in helping his husband, a member of the Krewe of Armeinius, with his
costumes for the annual Ball and other Mardi Gras preparations.

In addition to a constant love of his home state of Kentucky, where he was made a Kentucky
Colonel in recognition of his community service, Powell greatly enjoyed exploring other cultures
and traveled widely throughout Europe.

A lifelong Presbyterian, Powell regularly attended services at Touro Synagogue; he also prayed
regularly at St. Jude’s Catholic Church. Powell was also a member of the New Orleans Athletic
Club, where he could be seen working out throughout the week.

Friendly, outgoing, and beloved by everyone he knew, in addition to his husband and mother,
Powell is survived by his brother, John Powell, of Campbellsville; a niece, Christina Yates (Jamie); a nephew, Chase Powell (Chelsea); two great-nephews, Lucas Vanderman and Andrew Powell; a great-niece, Sophia Yates; and many other relatives and friends.
