* UpStairs Lounge Fire 50th Anniversary Commemoration Weekend: Various Locations Around City. For tickets and more information on the weekend’s activities, go tp eventbrite.com The UpStairs Lounge fire, a notoriously unsolved arson at a gay bar called the Up Stairs Lounge in New Orleans’ French Quarter, claimed 32 lives and injured 15 others on the Sunday night of June 24, 1973. It remains the deadliest fire on record in New Orleans history and was the worst mass killing of gays and lesbians in 20th -Century America. Yet, the tragedy received just a few days of passing media coverage in its time due to rampant anti-queer bigotry. Despite a bounty of evidence pointing towards a chief suspect for these 32 homicides – an internally-conflicted sex worker forcibly ejected from the bar – this crime was deemed politically inconvenient due to its so-called “homosexual overtones” and, thus, permitted to become the historic mystery it is now. 50 years later, the UpStairs Lounge fire officially remains an unsolved crime. In its heyday, the UpStairs Lounge was an egalitarian gay space that functioned, in many ways, as a forerunner to modern queer safe havens. From October 1970 to June 1973, the bar toasted Black as well as white gay customers in an era of brazen racial discrimination on nearby Bourbon Street. The Lounge also welcomed early gender minorities long before “gender minority” was a term, and it even played host to a gay religious congregation called the Metropolitan Community Church, which met on Sundays in the back. Gathered around the bar’s white baby grand piano, the Up Stairs Lounge regulars had a particular song that they liked to croon loudly together, drunkenly, to the point of tears, which became something of an anthem of the bar and what it stood for: “United We Stand,” by the Brotherhood of Man. The lyrics went, “United we stand, divided we fall.” We will gather at this summit to mark half a century since the destruction of the Up Stairs Lounge and to preserve the memory of what occurred. We will consider what progress has been made since that time period and also how far we have to go. We will join in dialogue to contend with the newly resurgent, international awareness of this once-neglected past. Lastly, we will recognize and eulogize the lives of the 31 men and one woman who perished on a random Sunday through no choice or fault of their own. In recognition of what those brave voices sang, let us embrace the spirit of “United We Stand.”
* The UpStairs Lounge: New Orleans Museum of Art; 1 Collins Diboll Circle. On June 23-25, Mélange will commemorate the 50th anniversary of the deadliest fire in New Orleans history, when an arsonist set fire to The UpStairs Lounge, a popular French Quarter bar and safe haven for the LGBTQ+ community. During a time when being gay was declared a mental illness, and dancing with the same sex could be cause for an arrest, UpStairs provided a refuge where patrons could unmask and be themselves; living, loving, and even worshiping freely. Not only was the UpStairs Lounge arson the deadliest attack on the gay community at the time, but it remains to be New Orleans’ deadliest fire. Thirty two lives were lost and deserve to be remembered. Through dance, film, spoken word, and elements of live music, dynamic stories of love and loss will unfold, bringing to life this quirky three room bar with red flocked wallpaper that held church services, presented charitable theatrical productions, and united their community in song, as they proudly sang United We Stand night by night. Meet Buddy Rasmussen, the entertaining and courageous bartender who led many to safety on the night of the fire and John Golding, married to Jane by day and out of the closet by night. Marcy Marcell, New Orleans’ first person to impersonate Liza Minelli in drag had omens on that night that are forever haunting. Reggie and Regina, a breathtakingly beautiful and tragic love story will send chills up your spine. We present a cautionary tale of what internalized homophobia and hate can do and a celebration of life. Return UpStairs with us as we revisit our inaugural production to illuminate the lives of its patrons, honor its continuing spirit and relevancy, and reflect on the legacy that we must carry on in today’s world. Performances will run at NOMA’s Lapis Center on June 23-25 at 8pm & June 25 at 3pm. Cafe NOMA will be open for dinner service until 7:30pm, and the bar will stay open until showtime at 8pm! Go to their Facebook events page for tickets.
