Last Resort: A Postmodern Jukebox Cabaret: The Allways Lounge & Cabaret; 2240 St. Claude Ave.; 10:30 p.m. – 12:30 a.m. In 2009 a little known pianist and composer by the name of Scott Bradley began releasing videos on his YouTube Channel, these videos showcased modern music in the style of early 20th century music genres, such as Jazz and Ragtime. In 2011 this musical collective of Bradley and his frequent collaborators became known as PostModern Jukebox. PostModern Jukebox has amassed millions of views, subscribers, and music streams. Scott Bradley may not have known this but this gave rise to much of his music being used by burlesque performers able to combine modern music with a neo-classical style of burlesque. Fly: Jefferson Performing Arts Society; 6400 Airline Dr.; Fri and Sat – 7:30 p.m. Sun 2 p.m. This 2009 play tells the stories of four of the approximately 1,000 black airmen trained in Tuskegee, Alabama, to serve in World War II as part of the 332nd Fighter Group of the United States Army Air Forces. Set primarily in the summer of 1943, the show depicts the training of the men before they go to combat and uses their experiences as a reference point for other African American trials and triumphs. Bourbon Street Awards: Corner of St. Ann and Dauphine Streets; 12 p.m. This annual event called “the most famous drag-queen contest in America” happens on Mardi Gras day in front of Good Friends Bar. Dozens of participants in flamboyant costumes compete for top honors. Categories include Best Drag, Best Leather, Best Group, and Best of Show.
