Last Resort: A Tom of Finland Cabaret: The Allways Lounge & Cabaret; 2240 St. Claude Ave.; 10:30 p.m. – 12:30 a.m. Picture it Kaarina, Finland 1920 a man is born that would change the face of the gay leather scene. Fast forward to 1940 and World War II and he is drafted into the Finish army. During his years in the army he like many other gay men at the time are drawn by the structure and hypermasculinity of the army. Once they leave the army, many gay men craved that power structure and he was no different. He begins to draw and market his homoerotic art heavily inspired by his fantasies and the men he encountered in the military and the gay leather scene. Thus, Touko Valio Laaksonen takes on the famous moniker of Tom of Finland. Tom of Finland gained notoriety for his hypersexual and hypermasculine art and even when queer people don’t recognize the name they are sure to recognize the art. After a year hiatus, the party returns to the Mardi Gras Museum of Costumes and Culture! In a Berlin nightclub, as the 1920’s draw to a close, a garish Master of Ceremonies welcomes the audience and assures them they will forget all their troubles at the Cabaret. With the Emcee’s bawdy songs as wry commentary, Cabaret explores the dark, heady, and tumultuous life of Berlin’s natives and expatriates as Germany slowly yields to the emerging Third Reich. Cliff, a young American writer newly arrived in Berlin, is immediately taken with English singer Sally Bowles. Meanwhile, Fräulein Schneider, proprietor of Cliff and Sally’s boarding house, tentatively begins a romance with Herr Schultz, a mild-mannered fruit seller who happens to be Jewish.
