Day of the Dead/Fete Gede: New Orleans Healing Center; 2372 St. Claude Ave.; 5:30 p.m. – 7:30 p.m. The New Orleans Healing Center invites YOU to celebrate your loved ones who passed Monday, November 1st, at our 41st annual Day of the Dead/Fete Gede celebration. This year’s theme is “life in the time of death”. In its 41st year, La Source Ancienne Ounfo , a New Orleans based Vodou society, in partnership with the New Orleans Healing Center, will celebrate the Day of the Dead/Fet Gede with a Vodou ceremony to invoke the Gede. It is soothing and reassuring to know that our Dead is not gone, that we can come together in the community to honor and visit with them. In return, our memory of the Dead keeps their spirits alive and present. The Days of the Dead coincide with “Fet Gede,” the festival for the Gede, a family of Haitian Vodou spirits, who are the patrons of the Dead. The entire month of November is dedicated to his celebrations in Haiti, but he is especially honored with ceremonies during the first days of the month. Death transforms from a menacing and fearful reaper, to a comically grotesque equalizer. Abandon your posturing if you want to avoid being the brunt of his ridicule. Gede is a trickster, who stands at the crossroads between life and death. Cocky, and crude, and often embarrassing, he is patron of death, sex, and regeneration. However, he is also the patron of young children and a great healer, when there is a life or death situation. His colors are purple, black, and white and he characteristically wears a top hat and tails or grave-digger’s garb and sunglasses – often with only one lens — either because he sees between worlds or in reference to his “one-eyed snake”. The traditional celebration and remembrance keeping will take place in the lobby, Grand Hall, of the New Orleans Healing Center. The event is free and open to the public. Masks and vaccination cards are required to enter.
All Souls on All Saints Day Mobile Altar Procession: Phoenix Bar; 941 Elysian Fields Ave.; 7 – 9 p.m. The Big Easy Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence will be leading a procession of remembrance of All Souls on All Saints Day Monday November 1st from 7-9PM. From there we’ll proceed through the Quarter/Marigny and it will end where it ends. This event is FREE and Open to ANYONE. Bring an offering (object, picture, anything) to place upon our mobile altar (All offerings are kept safe in reverence for use in future remembrances). Candles for the altar are available (in addition to any personal offering) but a donations are appreciated. Any monetary offerings/donations are NOT required. All funds collected go to local New Orleans Charities. Can’t make it? You can send us a remembrance virtually which we will place on the altar. Message us to get started.
