One of the major things I give thanks for every year is living in a city that has so many fun things happening. November has so many wonderful things to see and do as a primer for the holiday season. * Day of the Dead/Fet Gede Celebration: New Orleans Healing Center; 2360 St. Claude Ave.; 5:30 – 10:30 p.m. Fall is near, and with that comes one of the Healing Center’s largest events of the year – Day of the Dead / Fet Gede Celebration! Our Market opens at 5:30pm, with a ceremony to follow until 10:30 pm. Día de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead, is a celebration of life and death. While the holiday originated in Mexico, it is celebrated all over Latin America with colorful calaveras (skulls) and calacas (skeletons). Fet Gede in Haiti is just such a past-honoring event. Known as the Festival of the Ancestors, Fet Gede (Fet = Festival, Gede = The Sacred Dead) is the Vodou equivalent of Mardi Gras, the Mexican Day of the Dead, and Halloween, all in one.

* All Souls on All Saints Day: Phoenix Bar; 941 Elysian Fields Ave.; 7 – 9 p.m. The Big Easy Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence will be leading a mobile altar procession of remembrance of All Souls on All Saint’s Day, Wednesday, November 1, from 7-9 PM. Procession starts at the Phoenix on Elysian Fields. First stop is the New Orleans AIDS Memorial in Washington Square Park where we will offer a blessing of remembrance. From there we will proceed through the Marigny/French Quarter. This event is free and open to anyone. Candles for the altar are available. You can bring with you an offering of remembrance for anyone (even a beloved pet) to place upon our mobile altar (all offerings, whether an object, picture, or note, are kept safe in reverence for use in future remembrances).
