The New Orleans Film Society will present a special NOFS/365 Pride screening of George Dureau: New Orleans Artist on Monday, June 22, at 7:30pm at The Broad Theater (636 N. Broad St.). The screening will be followed by a talkback with directors Sergio Andrés Lobo-Navia and Jarret Lofstead.
George Dureau: New Orleans Artist explores the life and legacy of George Dureau, the iconic New Orleans painter and photographer whose portraits of Black, disabled, and LGBTQ+ New Orleanians challenged conventional ideas of beauty and celebrated the human form in all its complexity. Through rarely seen archival materials, unpublished photographs, contemporary interviews, and intimate conversations with Dureau, his friends, and his models, the film traces his creative process, his deep relationship with New Orleans, and his lasting impact on the art world.

Featuring an original score by composer Oscar Rossignoli, the 78-minute documentary offers a portrait of both an artist and a city. Dureau, who lived from 1930 to 2014, captured people and communities too often pushed to the margins. In his work and in his life, he reflected the beauty, complexity, generosity, talent, and messiness of New Orleans itself.
The directors began research for the documentary in 2017; it premiered at the 2023 New Orleans Film Festival. The film has since been recognized as an official selection of the New Orleans Film Festival, Miami Film Festival, FIFIGROT, and OUTshine Film Festival. The June 22 screening offers New Orleans audiences a rare opportunity to experience the film on the big screen during Pride Month.
Presented as part of NOFS/365, the New Orleans Film Society’s year-round programming initiative, the event reflects NOFS’s ongoing commitment to bringing meaningful, timely, and community-connected cinema to New Orleans audiences beyond the annual New Orleans Film Festival.

For audiences unable to attend in person, George Dureau: New Orleans Artist will make its streaming debut on June 22 and will be available to watch virtually through August 22, 2026.
