Ho Ho Ho!  Happy Holidays in the Big Easy.  This is the season of giving (and receiving). There are so many things to do that will jingle your bells and make you merry, Mary! Here are just some of the hot events in October. If you want your event listed, send me an email at ledgemgp@gmail.com.

  • NOAGE New Orleans Walking Group; Audubon Park; 6500 Magazine St, New Orleans, LA; 4 p.m. NOAGE’s weekly walking group meets on Mondays at 4 PM at the Magazine Street entrance to Audubon Zoo. They start walking promptly at 4, so be sure to arrive a few minutes early.  Please consult with your primary care physician before beginning any new fitness regimen, espe-cially if you are not used to regular exercise. PLEASE NOTE: The walking group will be AUTOMATICALLY CANCELED in the event of inclement weather.

They have been giving dance classes to the LGBTQ+ community and general public. Classes are free and start at 8:00PM and open dancing at 9:00pm. All are welcome and beginners are welcome.

  • Writing Across the Rainbow: New Orleans Pride Center; 2762 Orleans Ave., New Orleans, LA; 2 – 5  p.m. Writing Across the Rainbow is our new ongoing monthly LGBTQIA+ workshop focused on all aspects of writing, spanning how to get your first words on paper, to getting published and sharing your work with the world! Award-winning publisher, editor, and writer Sorella Smith will host this event which will also feature other writers as guest presenters. This is an ongoing workshop, so you can attend as many meetings as you want! This is a free event, but everyone should bring their own pens, notebooks, computers, and tablets. Everyone has stories to tell, fictional, factual, or oth-erwise. This workshop will assist you with such concepts as: World-building,, Plotting, Character creation, Continuity maintenance, Editing, Sharing con-structive criticism of work, The journey forward, either to publishing or wher-ever you want to take your writing.   • Queer Northshore LGBTQ+ Peer Support Group: Good AF Games; 2033 US-190, Covington, LA.; 6:30-8pm. Being in the LGBTQ+ community can be amazing, but it can also be scary, confusing, or even something you are forced to hide. One way we can help one another is simply by being there in times of joy and when someone needs extra support. Our QNS peer support group is not a replacement for therapy, but having peers to share with can help each other feel less alone, especially here on the Northshore. Our peer support group leader is QNS member, Leyla Hekmatdoost. Leyla is queer, a parent of LGBTQ+ children, holds an MA in Education, and has experience working with parents and children of families in crisis. As the peer support group evolves, we hope to recruit additional leadership from among the many wonderful mental health professionals who are QNS members. Nurse Blake is a nurse, creator, advocate, touring comedian and so much more. From an early age, he knew he wanted to be a Nurse and started working as a patient transporter at 17. Nurse Blake graduated BSN in 2014 from UCF in Orlando Florida. As an advocate from the beginning, he was also the President of the Florida Nursing Student Association. In 2013, Nurse Blake started Banned4Life to end the permanent FDA gay blood ban, which ultimately contributed to the lifetime ban being lifted in 2015.
